If you guys want argo flanges on a budget, might try dealerships or anyone servicing them. They commonly buy new flanges with seals rather than refreshing the old ones. Other than the seals, I check them for flatness on a table saw deck and true them with a belt sander. Esp important if you use the cork gaskets. Otherwise with silicone, Whipper plumbing putty, wouldn't be so critical. Seals are common sizes.

Attex 4 Stroke Green Machine Restoration

Thanks guys! Here are some updates showing Whipper's 4140 splined solid 1.25" axles on the Attex green machine project. These axles look absolutely bulletproof and I highly recomend them to anyone who wants to strengthen up the drivetrain on any AATV. The axles are sticking a little bit farther out than they will be when everything is tightened down because this was just a mock up of what it will look like. Notice all of the Max II parts that I used on this machine. (Recreatives drive belt, drive and driven clutches, rubber engine mounts, engine brackets, throttle cable, and throttle handle. I built the Attex like this due to the fact of ease and availibility of the interchangable parts with the Max.

Jeff,
I'm glad to see your back working on the Attex. This is going to be one mean machine when you're done. Whipper's stuff looks even better on the frame if that's possible. I'm green (Attex green) with envy! I assume the splines will be inside the frame when everything is done?

Thanks Mike! The splines will indeed be inside of the frame rails when I tighten everything down. I just had to temporarily set everything together because it was driving me crazy to see how the axles would look on the frame. Whipper did an A-1 job on all the parts. I have worked on many AATV's over the years and I will say that if anyone ever needs any axles made, Whipper's stuff is the best out there!"Looks like you have a problem with your 4 wheeler........you're missin' two wheels there"

That's a work of art, JP. I can't wait to see the completed project!

JP the axles look excellent, I like the detail on the wheel flanges with the tapered hub. Details separate us hacks from the craftsmen. Keeping the machined parts from rusting is always an issue. Did you have any paint or coatings in mind to keep them nice. Lets face it the axles and sprockets get to see all the dirt, grease and water. I have had mixed results with paint, both dry lubes and wet lubes. The last couple of machines I built I used chrome plated shafting to keep the corrosion down.
it might be a worthwile thread to discuss what paint, and lube works.Acta non verba

we send out all of the bare metal parts on the race cars to have them nickle plated. looks great, gets in cracks and keeps things from rusting from the inside out. no idea what it costs but i can look into it if your interestedA well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I just realized that it's been over three and a half, almost four years since I gave anyone an update on this project. Well it has been sitting in the garage with pieces needing to get drilled, fabricated, and bolted together still. I'm going to get to it possibly this spring if I get my Super Swamp Fox done by then (I want to have the 'Fox ready for the Busco Beach ride in NC for April).
I've been up late and thinking about 6 wheelers and decided that I might go in a slightly different direction with this project than I originally planned on doing by installing a 4 stroke V twin. If I could get some of you guys' thoughts on this, I'd appreciate it. Here are a few of the things influencing this decision:
-I sold a really, really nice 1976 orange/yellow Superchief a couple years back and I was thinking about getting another to replace it because it was such a blast.
-I have 4 other trail machines now.
-I recently bought a G50B Chaparral with the motor mount plate and wiring harness.
-A 4 stroke V twin is a great motor, but a high horsepower 2 stroke Chaparral G50B makes for so much fun, and they seem to be pretty reliable for a 2 stroke.
-The Chaparral G50B and motor plate will bolt right in since they were originally out of an Attex Superchief and I won't have to worry about getting new 4 stroke clutches or having to worry about buying and fabricating custom exhaust components for a 4 stroke V twin.
If you guys could give me your thoughts on which direction that you would go with this project, it'd be appreciated. Thanks.Last edited by jpswift1; 12-09-2011, 04:03 AM."Looks like you have a problem with your 4 wheeler........you're missin' two wheels there"
