  • just bought a 1969 attex 300

wanted to know if there is anything I should know about this thing, common problems ect. I just got the engin freed up and am waiting for the head to come back from the machine shop....... this thing lookslike it was parked in the late 70s and never touched since

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the site. You may want to look in the how-to section. There is a used ATV buyer's guide and even though you've already purchased the machine it has some good things to check and look out for. Other than that, get it running again and go have some fun.

      Hey dodgefate,
Here is a list of things of problems I have seen and would look for.....
I would double check your oil level on your tranny.
Make sure all the chains are nice and dont try to run a bad one just to get it going. If they snap it will probably wrap around the sprocket and crack the lower body.
Try to clean up the brake and drive rotors before using them if they are rusty. They will eat up the brake pucks. Best way to do that is get it running with no chains on and sand them while it runs/spins.
Make sure the outer tranny bearing by the body are good. I have seen them wear the tranny shaft down.
Make sure the exhaust is ok and not leaking where it will warp the back end of the machine.
The frame on these early first gen attexes are very thin and can rust through easily. When weaken it will flex in the middle where the inner bearings mount. Any body with some extra angle or flat stock and some welding experience can fix or beef it up in most cases.

Thanks so much for the input... The chains are shot, So i will be trying to find some of them, Right now I am working on geting the motor running (rockwell 300). What kind of fluid does the trans take and how do you know when it is full.. I have it sitting on stands right now, all the tires are shot. The frame seems to be pretty good looks like someone left it covered for years. I have wanted one of these things for so long and I only paid 200 for it.

Welcome, congratulations on a good purchase! It is very rewarding to restore one of these and drive it around. It seems everyone who sees one running gets a grin and says "thats cool" ! Always nice to add it is made in USA!
