  • new owner attex 500 superchief

Hello, My name is Morgan and I am new to 6x6s all together. I just recently came across an attex 500 superchief. I got about $600 into it and got it to where it runs and drives. It sat outside for several years and I am in the process of getting all the bugs out so I have some questions. First, it will not shut off without choking it till it stalls out. Someone rigged in a universal ignition to it and probably forgot to tie in the kill wire. What color is this wire? I plan to put a kill button on the dash to get around this problem unless someone knows a certain type of ignition I could use. Second the transmission, it works well but it leaks oil out of the right shifter shaft, not the output seal. any ideas/tricks for that? it is a 5000 series and it probably is a t-20. what are some adjustments I can make to it if needed? Also the clutch seems somewhat sluggish to hook up. This is getting better every time I drive it but it seems like this engine absolutely screams going down the road like the old 2 stroke Detroit diesels used to. I am having trouble with the exhaust. It looks like someone rigged it up. it does not go through the body, instead it exits left, solid mounts into the side of muffler and the muffler just sort of sits next to the engine with one side bolted to a bracket and tilted up a little so the exhaust wont burn the body. I know this isnt right because I have broken the header and already had to weld it back up. Also the old owner left the muffler angle too shallow and the exhaust scorched the rear edge of the tub and distorted it. Also I had to make a seat back because the exhaust also destroyed the engine cover, again the old owner did this. These are the only things I can think of but any tips are welcome and I will put them to good use.

    Hey Morgan,

Glad to see you made it onboard.

It sounds like you need to replace an o-ring on the plunger in your T-20. I think you can buy an o-ring at a plumbing supply house but I'm not sure of the size. Eventually Don will read this thread and be able to help you with that as well as many of your other questions.

I'm not sure about the wires to kill the engine because I changed out the original points ignition to CDI in my engine. I also don't have my machine handy to inspect for you but I believe the way I set up my kill switch was to have the two black wires with white stripes set up as a loop with the kill switch between them. When you close the circuit, the engine dies.

My clutch engages around 4,200 rpms but I have a 102c clutch weighted for racing.

There are lots of "how-to" articles on this site as well as pictures and videos. Stick around here long enough and you have that baby humming in no time...stay too long and you'll probably end up owning a half-dozen of these things. :-)

Congratulations on getting a Superchief- fastest production amphib ever produced!

The kill wire from the engine should be black with a white stripe.

If it's been sitting a long time, the clutch is probably sticky and may need to be cleaned up and lubricated.
