  • Attex Bearing change

I got my inner and outer bearings today from Memphis TN. for $94 can this be done with out tearing the super chief down?

IF you can get the hubs off the axles, you can change the outers without pulling everything apart. To change both inner and outer, you might just as well tear it down. remove the chains, and clean them. replace your bearings and put it back together. You should be able to do it without removing the sprockets from the axles (again assuming you can get the hubs off and change the outers from the outside end of the axle)

An outer bearing will always be more stressed than the inner......just a product of design. Imagine your axle as a diving board, the wheel is the part you jump up and down on (pothole in the road) and the fulcrum is the outer bearing. It will take most of the shock loads and half of the normal rotational loads. I don't know what the attex bearings look like, but a lot of machines have smaller inner bearings, knowing the stress is much less on them. So, to answer your question.......You will just have to check it to know if it's bad or not.

OK i got the hub off got the flange off got the retaining cap off with heat now the problem is what is left of the old bearing on the axle i was not able to cut it with a hack saw pipe wrench won't bite on it and my pullers are to short to reach it

If that is one where the axle is pinned to the sprocket tube with a bolt, you can pull the bolt, then the axle with bearing attached. Put axle in a vise, I have broken the bearing off (shattered) by striking wth a hammer. But thats probably not the right way to do it....sharp pieces fly everywhere. A die grinder works too.

if you have a dremmel, you can cut a slit in the inner race of the bearing. usually that will heat it enough to break it free. if not you can spread the slit with a chisel and it will break free. you don't need to cut all the way through the inner race, the chisel will break whatever material is left

I got the bearing in but when I try to grease it the grease comes out the bottom of the flange I lined the tiny hole up on the bearing with the zerk these bearings looked sealed are they?

Did you put any sealer between the flanges? I usually just use rtv silicone and let it dry overnight before greasing. If you need to go back and do this, clean the flanges real well with some solvent to remove the grease. I just run a thin bead around the outside edge of the flanges so that the silicone doesn't get anywhere near the bearing.

by the way everything came off easy just not the disintegrated bearing. These bearings have like a plastic seal blocking off the bearings are these pre packed? the bearing had a tiny screw in the top ring that i removed and lined up with the zerk

The plastic ring is a seal, but it will push out and let grease out of the bearing. they are pre packed from the factory, but you still need to seal the flanges and squirt some grease in there, Even new flanges won't seal perfectly to the bearing or each other and can let water through. If you seal them with silicone, then grease them, the grease fills in any voids that would otherwise let water through

Ok Got to drive it today!!! do you know where I can get the axle sleeve bushings? the ones that the bolt goes through and holds the axle into the hub or sprockets I have 3 sets missing on 3 axles

I just find a chunk of 3/4 (ish) inch steel round stock and have a machine shop gun drill a 3/8" hole in it. then cut it into 1/4" slices and weld them to the sprocket tubes. (bolt in place before welding)

I actually used 1" for the ones on the Hustler I just built (a broken Attex axle provided the material)

All I need now is the new throttle lever to get the g50b up to full power
