The steering laterals on my Attex appear to be made of 1/2" black(gas) pipe. Does this sound about right for the mat'l choice?

That's probably a bit overkill, Joe, but it'll work. I don't know the exact wall thickness on the stock laterals, but it's not incredibly thick. 0.0625, maybe?
You can use whatever works, but there's rarely an instance when they bend, unless you're really abusing them...sigpic -
Joe, that's what I've used for the last several sets I've made. It's overkill, but the plumbing section at Lowes is a lot closer to home than the local steel supplier
