  • ST400

Hello all,I am new to 6 wheelers. I just bought a st400, I'm not sure what year it is yet as I havent gotten the manual yet.Seller said he does have it and will get it to me this weekend.
It seems to be all original with the jlo engine and 3 lug tire. It has small holes from the tracks rubbing on the body in 3 of the 4 corners.
5 of the tires are in perfect shape but 1 of them is cracked and leaks air.
My first question would be if I should just try to find a 3 lug tire or if I should get all new hubs and tires. Second question would be How to fix the problem of the plastic tracks rubbing on the body. I will get some pics up in the next day or two.
Thanks for any help anyone could provide.
    John

You could probably just find another balloon tire for the time being so that you don't have to spend money converting it to a 5 lug pattern. Try posting a wanted ad here on the site. For the holes being rubbed in the tub, that could be from a number of things like bent axles, sagging body, wrong tracks, etc. Post a picture when you get time and some Attex owner can probably help you out more than I can.

Hey wagz, The tires say 65 in outside circumfrence.they are firestone,I think about 19". I filled the bad tire with slime today and it is holding air so we will see.
I may have been getting ahead of myself though. I got a battery today and tried to fire it up after cleaning the carbs.
I have a bad starter salenoid but even when I jump it I do not get spark.Could this be the salenoid or is the coil most likely also bad?
The thing has great compresion but now im wondering where im going to find a cross refrence for parts for this thing.
I need a new throttle cable and salenoid already and dont know about the coil.
Any Ideas on the spark anyone?
Oh I'm in northern Minnesota btw
        Thanks,
        John

The Solenoid, id say just go buy a ford starter solenoid prollly, i DONT know for sure, but thats what mine is/looks like. its mounted on top of transmission. Being an ASE certified mechanic, i know that if i had to, i could buy a ford solenoid N bolt it on. lol Or possibly a lawnmower solenoid would work just as well, all depends...just take it to Autoparts store with ya n tell em ya need a new one. Should be able to find one similar that will either bolt rite on, or taake very little effort to adapt for use.

As for spark..do you have new plugs?..i'd throw atleast 1 new plug in and see if that changes anything..if not, id then trace down the problem. Im NOT sure if it has points or not, but it may??...the others will help with this issue hopefully. I cant see the solenoid causing a no spark issue..although...it very well might?! also check your wiring for pinches, cuts, etc. anything that would stop the circuit from being completed. just basic common sense stuff, u know the drill.

As for parts....well...cross reffing is kinda hard to do...uhh...deal with the guys on this site for parts..trust me, it'll save ya in the long run.. I to need a throttle cable, as mine is kinda F-ed up as well, but im still workin with mine. lol I'd post a wanted ad in the "wanted" section for parts, or something of that effect.

          Keep us upto speed dood!

if it turns over and has no spark, your solenoid is fine. pull the flywheel and clean the points. if that doesn't get you going, you can get replacement points and condensers from Electrical Parts

If the engine won't turn over at all, then itcould be an issue with the solenoid (or several other things ) keep us posted and we will get you headed in the right direction

Hey guys thanks for the replys.
The salenoid has got to be bad, It doesnt turn over with the key but if I jump to the other side of the salenoid it turns over just fine.I do have a couple of auto salenoids but wasnt sure if they would mess things up if I put one in.?
I saw a couple posts about the points and will try that tomorrow. It does make sense.
I will get a couple pics up tomorrow and hopefully you guys can help me get this beast going before bow season starts.
I was suprised how well the body cleans up,I sanded the lichen off in a couple spots, wiped it with some goo gone and it looks damn near new. I really apreciate the help and hope you guys dont mind me picking your brains until I get this 6 wheeler thing figured out.
              Thanks,
              John

Well I cleaned the points,Put new plugs in and got the jlo to come to life today. I couldnt keep it running though.I need to take the tank out and clean it and get a new fuel filter. I'm also gonna have to take the carbs out and clean them again after pumping that crap into them.
Any ideas about the solenoid. The 12 volt auto solenoid has two small terminal and the exisiting one only has one.I believe its just running power back to the ignition switch, so would the auto one work or would I fry something?
I did get some pics uploaded to the gallery today.
Im busy tomorrow but I'll try to get the motor straightend out next week then address the track clerance issue.

Ok so I made a new throttle cable,Bought new chains and fixed the couple of cracks that the body had.I used yellow legos but the color wasnt quiet right. Anyway I have decided that I will upgrade to modern hubs and wheels since I need to extend the wheels a bit anyway.
Man This thing is getting expensive already.
Wagz, Did you gain any legnth with the 3 to 5 adapters?
I need to figure out what all I need to upgrade these wheels.

for an ATTEX, these hubs ATV Live Axle Hub | Chains, Sprockets + Hubs | Northern Tool + Equipment with some take off golf cart rims are a cheap solution. glue tires to the rims with http://www.permatex.com/products/aut...et_Sealant.htm and you shouldn't have too big of an issue with losing beads...

yo Fluidman, i didnt get my wheels yet, waiting on them to arrive. but everything else is ready. my adapters have new studs in them, and my tires are in garage waiting to be mounted. Ill let you know.

ALSO...as for the adapters that racerone has pointed out, i have 6 of them i need to sell. i have 95 dollars into them with shipping, if someone offers me 95 bucks, ill gladly tape the box shut, and ship them. lol On another note, i have a set of 3 to 5 adapters that the local machine shop made for me, their 1/2inch thick, and will need drilled out to proper diameter for wheel stud pressing. ive got 75 into those..although, with those, i suggest welding a piece of pipe onto the back of them like the factory attex adapters had.100_0914.jpg

Sadly..i have a blown head gasket on the stupid jlo right now..and im rather pissed off..lol been ttrying to contact one of the members on here about a 4 stroke they have for sale, but have not gotten a response back yet..looking into an ebay motor as a second thought, along with having a pulley bored and broached for special adaption that i havent seen done yet..and i think it'll work flippin great and make some other ppl wanna do the same thing.. (top secret, cant say EXACTLY what yet..hehehe)

ANYHOW...keep in mind what ive said. and ill keep in mind what you are doing..ive got this thread saved so i see your updates! lol.. sadly i havent got to update mine yet..lol..DAMN WHEELS AND GASKETS!!

                        Fluiddood:..question for ya..

Ok so I made a new throttle cable,
So how'd you do this? mines ripped and inner cable is exposed..i wanna replace mine as well..i just keep lubing it up for now till i get some insight on your trick.. Also where'd you order it from?

Man This thing is getting expensive already.
Yah no kidding..lol seems as though all the stuff for the old buggys is flippin xpensive, and tricky to find.. (not impossible..but tricky...) I kno ive got over 500 into mind so far and i barely touched the bottom of what i wanna do.. lol damnit!

                          Thanks guys.
Wagz, bummer about the gasket. Any idea if Those would extend the axle with the hubs on them? I need to gain an inch or two cuz my tracks rub on the clutch bulge.
If they would work,I would have no problem giving up the 95 bucks.
As for the cable,I wasted a day going to every shop in town and searching the net.
I ended up going to the bike shop and they had everything I needed.Brake cable that was long enough and an end cap for the cable housing.
Just cut the housing in the correct spot put the cap on and either solder on the old end on or make a new one.
Heres a link of the basic idea.make sure you use silver solder.

As for extending outwards, i'd imagine..although, i cannot say FOR SURE. i'd imagine they would though, also, you could look into wheels with different backspacing? someone else who's done thsi swap before may be able to give you more info??

Thanks for cable info too btw.

The 3to 5 adaptors will only give you the thickness of the plate in extension. I made my colt axles stick out of 4140 round polished steel. I cut them so to my desired length and set it up so they stick 10" out from the body. I could have done 11" or 12" if i wanted too, but the further out you set those wheels the better chance of breaking the axle due to increased leverage.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!
