I am about to purchase an Argo Avenger STR. I live in central New Hampshire. I was disappointed to learn that I can't register as a snow mobile because the Argo is over 54" wide. I will have tracks, and was wondering if there is a list of land owners I can get in touch with to ask permission to ride in the snow. I realize that I can only ride in the summer in the northern part of the state. Has anything changed about using the Argo in lakes? I will be in touch with fish and game, and am wondering if I still need to register as OHRV and a boat.

I find it funny that every state recognizes boats and automobiles as the type of vehicle that they are. But when it comes to OHRV, there is such a mish-mash of categories, it boggles the mind.
Vermont does have a one up on most states as they do recognize 6x6 and 8x8 and other similar vehicles as "ASV" or "all surface vehicles". They are and can be registered for land use as an ATV (see ss3504 Vermont Laws) and as a snowmobile/boat (see ss3204 Motor Vehicles). If used on water,as a boat, it must abide by all rules of Chapter 29 as it applies to boats/water craft. If used as a snowmobile or ATV on other than private property with written permission, such as "state" or "club" trails, registration also has requirement to join the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) or the Vermont ATV Sportsman Assocation (VASA). There are multiple fees that add up when doing all these registrations. I have heard, however, that the snowmobiler's do not like or want AATVs with tracks on their trails, which I find ludicrous as registration with all fees to all associations paid give AATV's the right to use such trails.
Title 23 Chapter 1 ss4 Definitions
(80) An "all-surface vehicle" or "ASV" means any non-highway recreational vehicle, except a snowmobile, when used for cross-country travel on trails or on any one of the following or combination of the following: land, water, snow, ice, marsh, swampland, and natural terrain. An all-surface vehicle shall be designed for use both on land and in water, with or without tracks, shall be capable of flotation and shall be equipped with a skid-steering system, a sealed body, a fully contained cooling system, and six or eight tires designed to be inflated with an operating pressure not exceeding 10 pounds per square inch as recommended by the manufacturer. An all-surface vehicle shall have a net weight of 1,500 pounds or less, shall have a width of 75 inches or less, shall be equipped with an engine of not more than 50 horsepower, and shall have a maximum speed of not more than 25 miles per hour. An ASV when operated in water shall be considered to be a motorboat and shall be subject to the provisions of subchapter 2 of chapter 29 of this title. An ASV operated anywhere except in water shall be subject to the provisions of chapter 31 of this title.
