  • helmets and AATVs

    Hey guys,

I'm sure Ontario law requires all persons in an AATV to where an approved helmet. That said, most people I see riding an argo are not wearing helmets. I really don't see the point or the need to wear a helmet on such slow and stable AATV. What has been everyone's experience with law enforcement and helmets in their Argos? Do cops generally turn a blind eye?

I have one of those Chinese military pilot-style helmets sold on eBay. While I wouldn't go barreling into a brick wall with one, I mainly wear it to protect my eyeballs and noggin from branches and stuff. Sitting down in my Max, I figure if I flip or roll, my back is going to suffer the worst. The tinted visor helps on sunny days too. The clear one sure helps on cold days. I don't wear it much if any in the summer when it's hot. I usually ride on private property so it doesn't matter what the law says.

Some parks require helmets. So I bought a DOT approved skid lid. Its like wearing a big ball cap. I plan on bailing before flipping it.

I use helmet when im drive little more public places than just our yard or home road and also some safaris and happenings helmet is must to use. It also makes things looks more official. I bought carbon fiber helmet because it doesnt weight a lot (950gr) and I put helmet light to it (lumilight 1400 Otsalamppu Lumilight Navigator 1400 - YouTube ) .

I use my ATVs at a work site, so the only helmet you see people wearing is a hard hat. Nothing says safety like a bunch of guys driving around in miners hard hats like the one below.

In BC you only need a helmet if the machine has 3 wheels or less.

I just came across this posting from 2013 it is now 2017.
In 2015 in Ontario...perhaps Canada... the laws changed regarding side by sides and Argos and we can now drive along the shoulder of the road like an ATV in most areas. The unit has to be plated and insured and helmets must be worn. As far as I know the helmet must be worn even on trails and the bush. No problem I got a great helmet.
Question came up though.... do you have to wear a helmet when operating it with an outboard motor on water?

I sure wouldn't want a full face helmet on in the water!

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
                Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

I believe it switches to boat rules on the water. You need to remove the helmet and have a life jacket but also need the pleasure craft operator card, boaters safety kit with the horn, bailer, anchor and all that stuff. You also need to get the argo registered as a pleasure craft with the registration numbers displayed on the side of the machine. I'm not sure how you can register it as a boat and an atv at the same time, but that's what I was told about using it on the water in my area. That being said I've never seen anyone do any of that helmet included and I'm not sure many law enforcement officers would know what was required either. Not too many officers around the lakes I go to.
