  • Helmet cam,s

I am looking at a cam. Or should I say a lot of different cam,s ???
I know there are as many cam,s out there as there are cars to buy. I do not like the wide angle fisheye effect. And I want a good steady shot.. It gives you more footage to use in the end.

What cam,s do you use and why. I edit with the Mac.

I have a GoPro 3 and love it. I either use the helmet mount or the roll bar mount.

Hero 3 Here as well. Works great. I have a head strap and a cheap handle bar mount that I mount to seat and other places.

I like the quality of the video I get with my DRIFT HD, it is very crisp and detailed. It has a progressive wide angle look to it, but I personally like having the larger field of view. I looked at gopro cameras before I bought mine, but for some reason, all the gopro videos I saw had a waviness (like a dream sequence) I couldn't get over. This was a few years ago, they may not do that now though.

Sony action cams look pretty good too. Here is a video that was shared with me. GoPro HD Hero3 White vs Sony HDR-AS10 - The ULTIMATE Action Cam REVIEW - YouTube
I went with the gopro because I over bid on it on eBay and could retract my bid fast enough. So I lived up to my bid. But I don't regret it.

The vast majority of videos I have look at. The picture is bouncing all over. And I find them hard to watch. I am leaning to the sony HDR-AS30 for the steady shot and low light.
Do,s the Drift HD or the GoPro cams have a nice smooth shot.

The smoothness of the shot really depends on the way its mounted. And since our machines are not the smoothest riding machines there are, we get a little bounce in the videos. Some cameras handle the shock better than others. But I haven't seen an affordable mount yet that will eliminate camera shake all together.

Head mounted is the only way to get a steady shot.
My preference is the VIO POV 1 or the HD. I have both. The simple operation, and features like "loop" can be awesome. Mounting options are endless. Remote controls is nice when you don't have tha cam mounted to yourself.
If I don't want to go to the trouble of putting on the VIO, then I just use video glasses, like IKAM. I have a few sets of those as well.

A few of us have successfully mounted cams on poles out in the front of the machines. It has proven amazingly stable.

True. I forgot about those. They do allow a good steady shot.

I have a Drift Ghost HD. You can select from three FOVs, so the fish eye view doesn't have to be as extreme. I also like having the 2" screen on it. I have it mounted to the brim of a hat. I had wanted to record myself shooting some USPSA competitions, but I crashed my bike before I could use it for that and broke my thumb, so I wasn't able to shoot.

You get 3 hours of battery life on it, and it has this neat "tagging" feature, which allows it to continuously record, but it doesn't actually save any of the video you take unless you "tag" it. It's kind of complicated to explain, but let me summarize it this way: if you were driving down the road with this camera on and the tag feature enabled, you could see an accident, say " I wish I had recorded that," then hit the tag button. What it will do is save a certain amount of time of recording from before you even hit the button and then afterwards. So, in theory, you can record events that happened in the past, without having hours of footage of stuff you don't want. Helps with the editing.

Plus, the drift app for phones and tablets is nice. So is the remote they include with the camera. And it's waterproof up to 9ft without any protective cover. I love mine. I had wanted a go pro, but I find I like the ghost a lot more.

I'd love to see a picture of your mount, and hear the theory on why it stabilizes the camera.
