  • Hi all, newbie here. pls chime in on home build units?

I would like a atv 6x6 or 8x8, maybe add track. 2 seater, narrow enough for woods,
Floats well and dependable. Can weld and fab if not too much machine work.
Want something that will last and is maintainable.
Any suggestions? Kits, plans, or just forget it?

about 25 or 30 years ago I saw a homemade AATV a guy built and it seemed to work well. He had a really nice home shop and was a machinist or some kind of professional as best I can remember. So it is possible but it seems like the work involved would be not worth all the trouble. Don't know if something you built would be any more reliable than what we have now. I personally would rather ride than build.

Why do you want to build a unit from scratch?

There is always a way to build a better mouse trap, but if that mouse trap costs $10,000. is it really better?

All the different brands of amphibs have advantages and disadvantages, I would suggest you drive a few to see what works best for you. Many of us have taken stock machines and modified them to suit our needs....maybe this is a good option for you.
