Was reading the thread about people getting stuck and how they got out and had a wild idea... A grappling gun for the winch... Something like a compressed air potato gun that fires a big grappling hook attached to the winch cable. That way if you get stuck out in the middle of a beaver dam you could fire the grappler to shore, hook something and winch yourself out. LOL

depending on how far you needed to get the grapple to a log, etc. one way would be to have the grapple on the ''rope'' type cable. don't have it on the winch, but stashed in the machine. if you get stuck, just swing it around your head and toss, keeping the end of the rope in the machine. once you anchor it to something solid, then just feed the rope thru a hole that goes thru the drum. start the winch rolling up the rope, etc. i think that would save having to pull the slack out of the drum. i don't think you could throw cable as easy as rope. if your so far away you can't throw it far enough, may need to walk !! johnboy

Just put a grappling hook on board a few months ago for exactly as John mentions. I swapped the rope style winch line over the wire long ago. Was in the river once and found myself in current faster than tires could propel on way back to camp. I needed to get to dry land to avoid the current but couldn't climb the bank due to current's push. Grappling hook would have been useful.

Yeah, I wouldn't try it with cable. Flat nylon would be my choice. And if all you're trying to do is propel a grappeler, you could connect a paintball cylinder to a piece of galvanized pipe with a 1/4 turn valve, stuff a wad of cloth or papertowel in, followed by the grappler, hit the valve and fire away. Lol. Distances wouldn't be as far as a potato gun, so lower pressure and reasonably safe. I think Adam & Jamie did something similar on Mythbusters for their Batman arm grappler thing.
