I live in Waterloo, IL, but willing to travel a couple undred miles to buy if its a good deal... What do I look for when buying used? Check wheel bearings I am sure, how do I get access to chains, ect to inspect them? What else should I look for when buying used to determine condition? Experts weigh in a guide me! Thanks!!
      Hey chuckp,
Like Mike says, the AATV Buyers Guide is a great place to start.
The next step I would take BEFORE buying anything is to attend one of the local rides.
Even if it means driving a bit, at the ride you can see the different machines and the guys will usually let you take it for a spin .
The test drives may change your mind about, HP, 6 vs 8 wheel, T20 vs ARGO trans, tires, etc.
      .
      Good luck.

        • Welcome garymickjones,

The Max II is a great little machine. Check the home page or do a quick search for "how to adjust a t-20." It sounds like yours just needs a bit of a service and probably some to ATF III as well. It's should be no big deal. Good luck.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

          • Hi everyone. New to the forum. From nw Iowa. Just acquired 2 6x6s. One is a 72 chaparral that runs and is in descent shape. The other is a scrambler. It's a little rough, and doesn't run right now. But has everything there as far as I can tell. Already I've learned a lot from this forum. I do a lot of hunting, trapping, and outdoor stuff, which is the reason for getting the 6x6. First ride had me hooked.

                      Ciao Roberto,
I work for COMAU/Fiat SPA installing/repairing machines in North America.

You have found the BEST AATV site there is.

I would think that one of your primary concerns would be parts availability.
With that in mind, I would stick with the main units currently being produced today, that would be ARGO, Recreative Industries(Max's) and MuddOX.
                      All are good machines.
Take a look through the threads and you will see the advantages and disadvantages of the different makes and models.
I believe the MAX's are the easiest to work on, but others hold different opinions.
There are many ways to ship items to Italy.
I ship Harley Davidson parts to friends in France and Italy quite a few times every year.

                      Buon Natale!

                      • Hi Folks Westcliffe01 here.

Currently living near Napoleon, MI (seems a lot of members are in the midwest). I'm looking to move out to the rocky mountains and build myself an off grid home. I was speaking to some of the residents out there this week and came to find that some of them have been snowed in for a month now. Usually, if they anticipate that an extended period of bad weather is on the way, they drive down off the mountain and park their cars next to the county road which is serviced in winter. Looks like they had a few back to back snow storms and 70mph wind... They have up to 6ft drifts which have meanwhile frozen solid.. So the cars are up on the mountain with no way to get down except walk.

When I originally did my research into getting around, I settled for a Kubota RTV 500. I picked it since it was the smallest UTV with a hydrostatic transmission. I got to go out there this last August and was satisfied that for the "dry season" I made the right choice. Not too big, not too fast, great torque for the steep hills. It started great regardless of the altitude or temperature (32F in the AM up to 80's in the late afternoon). Very fuel efficient too. The most I used in a day was 1.5gal.

However, my recent discussion certainly has me thinking about the winter weather, potentially deep snow and steep slopes. It looks like an Argo / Max with tracks and ice cleats is going to be in my future. An enclosure to keep the wind off too... The Bombardier / snow cats and the like look to be for people with a bit more disposable income...

                        • Hi Westcliffe01, welcome to the forum. I think an enclosed, tracked AATV would server you nicely. Let us know what you end up getting.

                          • Hello everyone, happy to be a part of your community, hope to gain much knowledge from participating by reading about your experiences and sharing mine. My current VATA is a MaxII but I'm interested in possibly getting into a muddox, the XL looks particularly intriguing and I am hoping some fellow forum members have some to talk about since information on the website is very limited. I guess that is about it for now, happy trails!

                            • Welcome 2tall,

The Max II is a great little machine and is now made by Mudd-Ox. The XL is a beast of a machine and is extremely capable. I do not own one, but have ridden in the XL and driven the GT. The Ox is not as playful as the Max, but when you get behind the controls of it, you feel like your in a machine that can truly "get the job done" no matter what job it is. There have been many updates to the Oxen over its time, and the XL is the pinnacle of all their positive improvements. It is big, but one made a debut appearance at Ashtabula, and Nick O had no problems fitting it down the trails with everyone else. I would suggest getting ahold of Matt O and seeing if you can get a test drive set up.
