Question for folks in Alaska

We have a Honda ATV that we use to get in and out of our remote cabin in AK. We have always had a snowmobile sticker on it. I got online to get an application for a sticker for our max and wound up on an AK forum, they were saying you don't need one for an ATV, only a snowmobile.
So are you folks running with or without a sticker, and what's legal?

I registered a MAX last year in order to access military land and DMV issued snowmobile stickers. Millitary requires all vehicles registered to b on their land. I dont register my other ones anymore.

Do you need to register? Well that depends on how you use it. If you take it out on a lake or river it becomes a boat by definition and it needs to be registered, I got it from DMV.

Good point beagle man. The trail to the cabin goes around 5 small lakes (15 acres or less), 1 has too steep of banks and the others we would just clip the edge if needed. In the 11 years and close to 100 trips in and out have yet to meet another atv. We won't use it for fishing, there's a canoe for that. I think I will be OK.

All the above answers are correct. I registered mine for the same reason Mark did; to be legal on military property. The second reason I registered mine is because common sense is not common anymore. When the fish cop says where is your registration I point to my sticker. They reply; that is not a boat registration. My reply is; this is what DMV gave me because they don't know if this is a boat, a plane , a train or a snowmachine so this is what they decided to call it.I get credit for at least trying and the officer goes back to the office and asks his coworkers how do we classify an ARGO? I also use mine in Yukon and some of the lower states. I have never been challenged outside of Alaska once they see the sticker. The snowmachine registration is good for 5 years.
And that's all I have to say about that!

What he said is correct. I had to do the same down in Florida for riding in the National Forrest with my Max IV. I've been stopped and the game warden says "this guy has made the effort to properly follow the regulations" and I'm turned loose and on my way again with NO ticket because I used th C.Y.A. Policy. That ATV and boat sticker cost so much less than any ticket that I'd ever get.

I registered mine so my insurance policy would pay if I sank the damn thing! BTW where do you put your 3" lettering on an Argo?

I just stuck my registration sticker on mine, I didn't put the numbers on because there isn't many flat spots on an Argo and nothing really sticks very well anyway. Hey Crossbowme , if you like riding in Maine you would love it up here in Alaska, I'm from the Rumford area of Maine.

I drove to AK via ALCAN Highway in 2012. Drove my truck to to Deadhorse, Denali and Anchorage. My wife flew in and we did some exploring. I would love to take my Argo back up there and hunt and fish all summer.

Here in Maine I do the Rangeley/Eustis/Stratton area (not that far from Rumford), a lot of time Down East off Route 9 and 1. Mostly any area north/west/east of Augusta.

I've gotten useless in Eustis many a time, and the Rangeley Lakes area was my play ground for many years. If you make it back to Alaska, give me a shout. I would be happy to take you and your for a ride in the bush and put you on some nice rainbow trout. Alaska is just a big Maine umm a very big Maine.
