  • Headlights upgrade?

While I was installing my tailllights and playing with the lights on my Frontier a thought crossed my mind. The headlights aren't bad but they could be brighter.

I've seen on the quad sites that alot of the guys are ugrading their headlights with automotive style bulbs. They're replacing their 35W bulbs with 50w, 60w and even HID 100w kits.

A quick google search on my bulbs (GE 862) didn't come up with any upgrade or replacement choice. The only thing I learned is that it's a 37W bulb mainly used in tractors.

As anybody done something similar to their Argo or Max?

    headlight suggestion

I have a Sierra Traiboss that was missing the headlights when I got it. I got some sockets from Lowes and now use a pair of those sealed 12V replector halogen lights normally used for interior decorating.

One thought about how many watts you're planning on burning: check to see how many watts you're alternator is rated for, lights that draw anything above that are going to be tapping the battery.

I had a couple of 50W bulbs on mine, didn't even think twice about it until the winch wouldn't work because the lights drained the battery.

Mine were dim too so I added some extra lights. Now there not dim at all. Those are just a set of fog lights that I picked up at the auto parts store for 30 bucks

37 seems about what argo has always used. You can up the bulb size, don't know how far you can go before the housing gets too hot, based on summertime temps.

The Frontier's 23 briggs has the 20-50 charging system, so no issue with adding a significant load.

I recently put some Hella driving lights on my front rack, which is great because when driving in tall grass and brush, the front headlights were worthless. You may consider adding some lights above or near your eye level. Then you can just use the stock ones when not much light is needed, and then hit the brights when you really need to see.

              lights

I am a farmer and i if you want brighter lights go to a NAPA store and for round aircraft landing lights. There just like the round tractor light but much brighter. And at a good price.

I have the optional factory bumper/offroad light combination that was available on Hustler 980 BIGFOOTs and I changed my factory lighting around, but it still looks stock. In place of the clear sealed beam headlights I installed amber LED truck lights that have a clear lense and I also put LED taillights that are the same shape and color as the factory ones, just much brighter. Those amber LED's light up so bright, it is easy to confuse them with halogen amber fog lights.

As far as the headlights go, I installed 35 watt halogen H3 bulbs in both factory Hustler fog lights. This entire setup was designed to give me the most light output possible without having the battery become discharged when running it. When cruising along, my ammeter doesn't read any discharge at all. If the machine were to sit there and idle it would slightly discharge, but I don't leave the Hustler idling for a long period of time so that isn't anything to worry about. And by the way, I have the stock Briggs Vanguard 10/16 Amp alternator. Now you guys have me thinking about upgrading my halogen lights to HID's!!! Brighter light output with less current draw!

You can kind of see the setup here in this picture of Amphiman1 piloting my Hustler BIGFOOT.

Well, Since the JLO 2-stroke in my Wolf won't handle real high loads I have gone to LED tail-lights and am in the process of custom-making LED headlights. Should look stock when off and like Halogen when on, but with low temps and lower Amp draw. I'll post as soon as one's done to compare.
