But how does a guy figure out something small enough to fit under a Max or an Argo? Trying to keep moving parts to a minimum, I think it would be best to have one gearbox that goes from trannyro wheels, and direct from there on out. What would be a good affordable power transfer mechanism for vertically to a horizontal shaft?

alot of those russian guys build homemade tracked machines using the rear end diffs with brakes on each side for a skid steer system. but they use one drive sprocket for the tracks like tanks and dozers. punch it on on u tube, there are some really cool homebuilts. you can buy vertical to horizontal gearboxes used on bushhogs for $ 100. those would work on the front and rear axles on each side. but you will still need a 3 way for the center gearbox. one input and two outputs. will still need to build a custom frame ( like on my max 2 ) to put every thing together, then mount the aatv body to that frame and drive each center gearbox input shaft with the t20. you would probably give up floating though. it would work i believe. johnboy

Alright cool. Definantly be an interesting concept, I got a lot of learning to do about ratios and transfer systems and what not.
