New to sight and need advice on aatv

I am in the market to purchase an aatv. I am most familiar with Max & Argo I have also talked to Matt Oxender about the Muddox. I would like input on machines 6x6 & 8x8s. I probably won't purchase until spring but I'm not sure. Any info would be appreciated.

advice on atv,the way I did it

Go to a week end ride and just camp out. Talk to the owners of different machines. Go for a short ride with them or as a passenger on a group ride.They all have thier application where one make might shine more than the other ,power to wieght,ride ,manuverability, ease of control. Your state you plan to register it in may be a factor. Example over 1000 lbs. in New York you may have to register it as a off highway vehicle instead of a ATV, some width retrictins may apply,going to use it as a boat,snowmobile could be other issues on some makes,could be a roll off the dice at D.M.V. that day. Do you want to transport it in a pick-up or trailer. Then options ,skid plts.,tracks, tires,roll cages,motor size(seems like you can never have enough motor),extra axle bearings. Your mechnical apptitude, how much do want to restore to new condition and when your done what do you have? Then of course it comes down to money, what is your commitment to the sport. Good Luck

Thanks Dennis I'm in central Iowa so I don't yet of any rides going on but I will look. I want to buy a new machine this time around and later try some older ones. Thanks again.

I think that that is a good move, there are also a large number of like new machines that may fit the category of like new. The main thing is to find a good machine. It is always nice to be able to enjoy the sport first then buy a project machine. Becoming frustrate trying to get a project built and have fun sometimes takes the fun out of the sport and people give up.

Do you have any particular task in mind that you want your machine to perform best at?

Fishing/hunting
(water usage seems to lean more towards 8x8 for stability in water)

General fun

large family (need larger capacity)

Some of this info may help in your decision making process.

Check out the map and see if there is any members near you. I am sure they will be very helpful as to the abilities of the machines.

There is at least two ARGO dealers in Iowa that have property to test drive on.I bought a new 2007 frontier 650 6x6 in april. Got 90+ hrs on it now.I swim mine in the Missouri River alot. On occasion I'll load it up and put it in lake Red Rock and in the Des Moines river south of the dam. Hope to see more amphibs in Iowa. You might check the Iowa laws for aatv's before you buy also they are not aatv friendly yet!!!
