  • restoring an ABS tub ?

I saw a post some one posted months ago about bringing the original luster back to an old , dull , ABS tub , but I don,t remember what topic it was posted under ? I think some one mentioned using a heat gun or a propane torch lightly back and forth , until the ABS starts to sweat , and this will bring the original shine back ?

      Hey mudbug...

If you're talking about ABS and not Polyethylene, the only real way to bring back the shine is a combination of sanding and waxing. ABS doesn't respond the same way Poly does to a heat gun. It just kinda gets mushy, burns pretty easily and is pretty much a dissappointment. The process does work a bit for Poly, though. Which are you trying to bring back?

I should try (someday) to get an article or a video together showing how to do it with ABS. If you're a bit patient and don't mid spending 8-12 hours or so ( and don't want any fingerprints left ) restoring ABS is a very rewarding effort.

Yeah, you said ABS but after reading what you typed I assumed you were talking about HDPE? The heat gun and propane torch work for it. Otherwise go with hydromike's sanding process or I believe acetone on a rag will work too although you won't get the results that Mike did.

Those comparison pictures look awesome Mike!
