  • Any Mathematicians out there?

A one pound lead weight, spinning in a 6" circle, at 6000 rpm. If released from the 6" orbit, what is it's speed and associated force as it leaves on it's tragectory?

Took the Response out today.. was ready to leave and thought, just one more top end run down this gravel road.. 6000 rpm.. KABOOM/POW!! VIBBRRAATTIIOONN!!!!

Back home and apart.. it broke a "puck" and tossed one of three lead slugs out of the clutch. Man, it sounded like the end of the world when that thing let loose.. can't believe the crankshaft didn't break. I need a 225 gram weight and it's phenolic "puck" if any dealers read this.

Umm, Fast? and a Lot? Not sure, but hope it didn't do too much damage to your machine.
Well, now I'm gonna have this in the back of my head next time I'm tuning my machine

The vibration that happened in the time it took to bring the argo to a stop was so severe, it loosened all 4 of the engine mount bolts, broke a sheet metal heat shroud, and backed out a carb mounting bolt.

Parts are on the way, thanks to Gene and Betty Lintz in Iowa. I bought extra pucks and will probably be checking them often.

6" circle could mean 6" circumference or 6" diameter, so I calculated both.

6" circumference (which would be a very small wheel):
6000rpm times .5ft/revolution equals 3000ft/min, or 50 ft/sec (or 34.09mph). Using an online ballistic calculator here:

Pellet Energy Calculator for Air Rifles and Air Pistols

You get 38.85 ft-lbs of kinetic energy. A typical .22LR cartridge generates 116 ft-lbs of energy.

        6" diameter:
        6000rpm times 1.57ft/rev equals 9425ft/min, or 157 ft/sec (107.05mph).

You get 383.43 ft-lbs of kinetic energy, about equivalent to a very hot 9mm.

WOW!! I'm not going to skimp on the clutch guard on my racer.

OK it qualified for that data The projectile aspect didn't do much damage, hard to tell exactly where it went. I had a minkota plug-in for my winch, mounted in the body in a 1" hole. It removed the plug from the hole and stripped the wires from the socket and left a shallow pot knot nearby in the body. But the vibration was unbelievable, I thought the engine had blown up in a very malicious way. I think 5000 rpm will be my limit from now on.

This is a pic of the 2nd clutch that blowed up. The first one blew right out of the back of the spider. We found parts out in the driveway for 2 weeks.

Always wondered why the Spider had an aluminum skin backside.
