  • Cleaning out the bottom of the ATV.

Just wondering what everyone does to clean out the bottom of the ATV from time to time. I had a look and it was pretty messy inside, maybe from swimming without bung plugs and maybe just years of lack of cleaning it out.

I was even thinking of putting in the bungs and filling the bottom with diesel and scrubbing with a brush to get the much out.

So what's the go? What does everyone else do? It's not like anything that gets in has somewhere to go and grease and stuff from the chains seems to float around in there too, so cleaning it seems a bit of a challenge.

I use a shop vac for the loose items, then a hot water pressure washer for the tougher grunge. If you dont have a pressure washer a car wash will do it.

Shop-Vac and compressed air for the loose stuff. Put the rear of the machine up on blocks and Jack the front end up higher in a manner that the tires can spin. Fire the machine up and bungee cord the sticks forward so that the tires continue to rotate. Garden hose everything you can out of the machine. This will take quite some time and many clearings of the drain plugs. Then I hose everything down with a quality Degreaser and do it again. Let everything dry and relube the chains

after a thorough cleaning didn't take long to realize the previous owner of my argo didn't care about the debris in the tub. I went through and made screens out of that 1/4" square chicken wire they sell in rolls at the depot and tried to block any large openings into the tub. I also teaked the floor pans to avoid openings for debris to pass by. I'm a firm believer that all the debris at the bottom of the tub mixed with dirt water, grease and oil chews up the chains an sprockets faster.
