  • Impatience got the best of me again.

Well in my haste trying to get done as much as I could with the okay weather yesterday, I mashed my thumb real good. Instead of just waiting on my buddy to drop off a hf tire machine I tried going at mine with a ratchet strap on the corner of my porch where the railings meet. I was cranking and cranking that strap and it was getting tighter and tighter, I was almost satisfied and said to myself "alright one more and she ain't going nowhere". As I cranked that last crank with all my might, pop, that cheap ratchet mechanism slipped, and my thumb was right in the danger zone, mashing the tip of my thumb like someone pinched it with bolt cutters. Then I had to figure out how to get my thumb out if this mess. It was not a fun time and I only managed to dismount two tires and mount one. I felt so simple after that because I know better than to put my digits and limbs in pinch points. But that's what I get for my impatience, hopefully the tip of my thumb quits burning in the next couple days so I can make more progress, these type of setbacks will have me down another year, lol. Be careful out there and don't let impatience get the best of you.

Sorry to hear, mounting and unmounting tires is no fun. I end up just paying the small price to have shops deal with it.
One of the best pieces of advise I ever heard was.
Never put a finger where you wouldn't put your .......

Lol yeah I've heard that. It was my own haste that got me, I knew better and wasn't paying attention and put it where I knew it shouldn't be if I'd have been paying attention to what I was doing. Some of these seem almost glued to the wheel, these old tires get awful hard and stubborn after 40 couple years. I'm a cheap ass so I do as much as I possibly can on my own, then I don't feel bad about spulrging a little on other stuff I don't need.

I once saw a great 4x4 mag comparison test of the low PSI bead retention.
        They had standard rim.
        Single side Beadlock
        Both side Beadlock
And a set of Rims and tires that had been mounted for over 30 years.

The standard rim feel off around 9psi
The single beadlock only helped to about 7psi
but both bead lock sided rim held down to like 3 PSI
However the tire mounted for 30 years would not come off the rim while driving at any PSI including zero LOL

I've had my trailer jack sitting on it to try and push the bead off the one and it doesn't show any signs of wanting to move, I move it just enough to try and walk it around the bead but no luck. I can 100% believe it after fighting these, I've fought big truck tires, 14s, 15s,16s,16.5s with varying conditions of tires and these are by far the most stubborn lol, little dinky 8 inchers.

I may be a little late with this advise, but....If these tires are no good, just cut them off. Take a utility knife and cut around the tire about an inch above the rim and get the tire out of the way. Then cut through the bead in one place and you're done. Be careful and don't cut your self in the process!!

I had thought of cutting them with my grinder and cut off whhel but didn't want to risk nicking the bead surface on the wheel. I was able to break all the beads though just some stubborn ones.

Those guys over in Australia are a wild bunch! I watch this car show sometimes of these insanely high horsepower cars they build to do these burnout drag races, I couldn't imagine that kind of power on tap. I've encountered similar situations fourwheeling where we shouldn't be and someone gets tight, come back everyday after school with a group of buddies and trucks and try to unstick the stuck one, it's amazing how tight some if that mud hangs onto a truck and doesn't want to give it up lol.
