I have used a 1039M3 Carlisle ultamax for many years. Your number was an original RI number. Check out manual for Salisbury- comet in this site for factory tension settings. I want mine just tight enough to not squeal on the crankshaft at idle in gear. Any looser than that you sacrifice some low end power.

          Hi JB,
I use this clutch spray lube, works well.

As for the belt, I also use Dayco. You will want a HP3003

1 1/2" is a good start for deflection. If the belt squeals then loosen a little more.
          Hope this helps.

thanks guys....that's the info i needed ... my belts pretty worn and the deflection was around 2 - 2 1/4 '' so i was probably losing some power . j.b.

Educate me please, what do you mean by "belt deflection"????

It's a test on the correct "tightness of the belt" or more specifically the proper distance between the driven and drive clutch shafts. With the belt installed, push on the outer part of the belt, halfway between the two shafts, push in towards the inner part of the belt. If too loose, the measurement will be 2 or more inches, too tight less than 1 1/2 inches. The "deflection" should be between 1 1/2" - 2".
Too tight and the belt will squeal when idling and wear out the inner edge of the belt. Too loose and there will be a loss of low end torque and high end speed.
                Did I get that right?

yes mike that's a good explanation. basically put the belt on and push down on the top of it half way between the clutches and measure how far down it goes . 1 1/2'' is good start . just got my new belt on the max2 ( dayco hp 3003 , mfg. co. ). have'nt tested it yet , it's raining ...but looking forward to see if it performs better . i assume it will stretch somewhat after a while and may need tightened up a bit down the line . j.b.

My max2 currently has a Dayco 2801-161 belt . By deflection do you mean, if I put a straight edge on top of the belt and push down in the middle, am I measuring from the straight edge to the top of the belt or the distance between the insides of the belt??

Measure from the straight edge to the top of the belt.
