I'm still in the process of restoring a Max II I picked up for free a couple of months ago. This weekend I came across a deal I couldn't pass up. A guy had two 6X6's sitting up in his yard. An old Attex and an old Hustler. The hustler has the original 16hp Kohler enigne in it. The Attex didn't have an engine, but he had a Rockwell JLO 398 ccm engine laying around(it looks like it's in great shape. At first he said he would take $200 for both 6x6's. I asked if he was firm on that price and saud he would let em both go for $100. I asked him what his plans were for the JLO engine and he said he would sell it to me for $100 as well. Needless to say I brought a trailer back and hour later with a check for $200. I thought it was a good deal. I will posts pictures when I get a chance. I'm thinking about scrapping the Attex and using the JLO in the MAX II. Will that engine push the Max well enough? Any thoughts?

WOW! Great deal on two very nice machines! Whatever you do don't scrap the Attex.......actually don't ever scrap any AATV. I'm sure someone would get some use out of it if you posted an ad in the classifieds section of the forum. I can't wait to see some pictures of these machines. It sounds like the Hustler is a 950, Kohler K341 16HP single 4 stroke, and if that 400 JLO was in the Attex at one point it is most likely a 400 Chief or ST/400. I'd leave the 400 for the Attex and finish rebuilding the Max as you were. The 400 would move the Max, but it would move the Attex much better because it is a lighter machine, so you should use the Attex as your speed machine and the Hustler and Max as your trail machines. Can't wait to see some pics and good luck with the projects......keep us posted.

The Attex is in pretty bad shape...

I am going to clean both machines up this weekend and see what I can do. But at first glance the attex looks like it will need more work than I have the time for. The guy I bought these machines from said he got the 398 from an old snowmobile. He said the attex didn't have an engine when he got it. Get this... he said he was going to build a chainsaw with the 398?!?! He goes to the logging competitions, so I guess other people have done it. Thanks for the tips.
Would anyone have any specs/manuals on the old Kohler engines? Where would I begin looking?

I am not sure where you are at, but if you are anywhere close to me, I would most likely be interested in the attex. I am looking for a project one.

OK Stinger...where abouts do you live? If this Attex had a poly body (not likely), I'd be very happy to buy it from you.

To all the purists (I know, I'm one), I know the poly bodies never came with a JLO but Stinger did say the previous owner got the engine out of a snowmobile.

                  Southeast Louisiana

I opened up the Attex tonight and it is very bare bones. Saturday I'll be going through both and let you know what else I find. But it doesn't have an engine.

                    Progress!!!

I was able to start cleaning up the Hustler 950 this weekend. I dug out about 3 wheelbarrow loads full of leaves, dirt, and sludge. I took the top shell off and started digging with a paint scraper and a hand trowel. Once I got most of the heavy stuff out, I took it down to the local car wash. It looks like the body, engine and frame are in decent shape. I took the carburetor off and soaked in Chem Dip, but I will need a new gasket for it(If I can find one). I hooked the solenoid up to a battery to see if we could get the engine to turn over. It did, and we are getting good spark. However the mechanical fuel pump is not pumping fuel. So the next step is to get a new gasket for the carburetor and get a new fuel pump (might try an electronic fuel pump). I will try to post pictures of it soon. The Attex is a 400 Chief. about the only thing good on it is the frame and maybe axels. The body is cracked in several places.I guess that's it for now.
