Never having owned an AATV I was wondering what the limiting factor is for speed. Is it in the transmission or is the engine governed at a certain speed? Is there any easy way to bypass it to gain some extra MPH? I know people say for what these machines are used for you mostly go slow. I have a gps on my ATV and average 30MPH on any given ride. I would just think it would be nice to go a little faster in an AATV when on the long fire road type trails

My Hustler with the 440 2 stroke is still rapidly acclerating as I pass through 30 mph on my gps. The limiting factor for me is the ability to drive it with 2 sticks at this high of speed. It starts feeling unstable to me and I get scared and let off. Keep in mind, this is a 38 HP machine. Most of the 4 strokes are about 1/2 this in HP, but they have gobs of low end torque. Thus, they go about 1/2 the speed.
To answer your question, in my opinion, more top speed is a product of more HP which allows you to run higher gearing.

Well it is both the governed speed of engine and the gear ratio of trans/chains. You can mess with the engine governor but at a risk of engine damage. You can mess with sprockets to gear it higher. Some models are easier then others, some you may need to replace a bunch of sprockets while others just 2. It all depends. Some older machines, attex expecially, can go 40mph. beefed up few go beyond 50mph. Though I have never reached more then guessing 30, I can only imagine how scary that would be to go 50. Compared to a quad we are slow in design. Which means, more time to look around.
