Modified vise grips.

Hi everyone,

I am getting ready to reassemble my 84 argo. I have read that a pair of modified vise grips make idler chain installation alot easier. Has anyone used these? If so how did you modify the vise grips? Any pictures?

I have a set. I had an old pair of 7CR (7" curved jaw) that I ground down on the outside of the top and bottom jaws to fit between the links of #50 chain. I also ground the inside of both jaws a bit to fit snuggly on each link. They're absolutely priceless, and more fun to use (fun?) than the "right" tool.

I'll try to get a picture tonight.

As an aside, Leo borrowed my pair last year at the Ledges ride. I TOTALLY forgot that he did.... They arrived last month in a box from Leo, along with a 2008 Ledges T-Shirt! Thanks Leo!

Vise Grip.

Thanks for the info I will try and make a pair with the grinder. If that doesn't work I will order the proper tool.

I did the same thing only I used needle nose pliers. Just ground down a notch so the chain stays in easier instead of sliding out. It may be a little tricker to use but probably easier to adjust the pin/pin distance. I never used the real kind or the vise grip style. They do work good enough for me though.

You don't need any pilers I use a heavy zip tie pull it tight install link cut it
off your done. Works great and is cheap hey probably have some laying around. Try it.

I welded alink of chain on vise grips then cut through center with metabo.
