  • How would you do it?

    OK Guys,
I went ahead an got myself a small sailboat, now I have to get it to the lake somehow. The boat is about 15' long and about 5' wide, not really heavy but is probably going to be one of the more awkward loads I have hauled. It will be about a 10 mile trip through some serious muskeg swampland to get the boat to the cabin. I have a couple ideas, one involves a helicopter lol. The other involves B training a couple trailers behind the Argo. I figure I could support the boat across 2 trailers in series. The boat would have to be loosly tied to a pedistal support on each trailer, allowing for flexing, turning, and creaping through "Argo eating mudholes" . I think the biggest problem with this plan is the "Tipover Factor", tipping 2 trailers, connected togeather by a sailboat could be a mess, as more than likely I will be making this trip "Solo" (as usual).

So, I would be interested in any thoughts you guys might have.
If this was an aluminium boat, I would have no concerns. I could unload it and just drag the boat through the bad sections. But, as this is fiberglass, I don't think that would be a good idea. Loading and unloading it myself would be a pain for starters, and there is also the concern of banging into trees, grinding against trees in tight corners, hidden rocks, ect......

Looking forward to some great ideas

If you tied 2 axels with pads & flotation tires on to the sailboat in might work, or get a john boat put the sail boat in it and drag it out to the cabin. Then you have 2 boats.
        Good Luck!!

The John boat with flotation tires seems to be a reasonable answer. Rock does the sail boat have a lower fin and if it does that may put a crink in the john boat idea.

A double cradle front and rear with swivels is another way. How about posting up a pic of the vessel Rock.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

              Hummmm!!!

              1- Recruit help?

              2- Hellocopter?

              3- Trail draggin?

Rock Dr - How big is the Daggerboard? Can it be removed?

If so, Boad is apx 15ft should have 10-18ft mast and up to 6ft Dagger. Fold mast - remove Dagger - load upside down on very sturdy small trailer and remove the tounge. Somehow load with trailer over 1/2 way back of center and affix tounge to pull with. Keep heavy tounge weight for traction.

              2 Cents Worth?

Take lots of pictures. I want to see this!!!!!!!!!!!

                use the chopper

we flew a 16ft. fiberglass boat to our moose camp. Used a long line and picked it up by the transom handles. He set it down on the beach in front of camp. not a scratch.

Ihave seen 1 log loads comeing down the mountens in OR. they just use the log as the trailer and strap a set of axles under itmaybe you can use the same method

What about strapping it on top of the Argo. It would stick out a couple feet infront and behind you but the extra weight could help with traction and you wouldn't have to deal with a trailer.

I don't have a "john boat" or any idea where I could get one , and I don't want to buy one. ( I already have 5 boats, but none available to try this aproach, or not sutible). I may try the cradle idea, but I'm hoping I don't have to go to the trouble of fabing something up that I will only use once.

Tks for the input Lewis, you have me thinking

Yes, help would be best, and You are welcome to come help. The problem is finding help sometimes.
The chopper idea is near the top of my list.
I would like to lean away from the taildragger idea, I'm afraid I might break something
The Dager is removable, and I could actually cut the hitch off one trailer and add an extension to it pretty easily. I never considered this idea. One trailer would be easier than two, but I might still have troubles getting around tight corners.

This was my first thought, but:
I don't have "rollbars" over my Argo, for one, and two, I do have a little experience hauling loads on "rollbars".............In my little bit of experience trying this, I have managed to roll 3 Argo's with small loads on top. This trail has some "tippy" spots, and any weight on top makes me a little uncomfortable. The one time it happened, a "large" friend was on the uphill side when we tipped. Him being about double my 200lbs, he had me pinned down pretty good for a bit........In a muskeg hole., didn't hurt, but I was pressed into the muck right up to my ears

                      Thanks guys

                      Any more ideas are welcome

i hate to say it but getting the boat there probably isnt your biggest concern. getting the mast up with 3 people is tough, 2 people is hard, 1 person is almost(if not definately) impossible. i think you could do it with one trailer but the mast is probably pretty long so getting around corners is going to be hard.
heli would be the safest but probably not easiest or least expensive.

I can deal with it once I get it there, but the mast should not be too much trouble, it's only about 20' (I suspect that this thing is not as big as you might be thinking). You are right, about the corners, that MIGHT be a problem, hopefully I won't have to cut too many trees down.

The price of the chopper is not a problem, I have favors owed to me, but I like to keep a few in the bank, just in case.

I just took some pics, and will try to get them up later.

                          Tks guys

That's funny Rock, glad you weren't hurt when your friend fell on you. I started laughing with this mental picture of you plastered into the musk. Sorry!!! What can i say, i love slap stick comedy.

trust me, its harder than you think. we just sold a 16' boat(M16 scow). the mast is quite hard to get up.
