  • winch recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a good winch? Its for a Max iV. I'm worried that being in water constantly will fry a cheap one fast; but I'm not able to pay $600 for a state of the art WARN either. Anyone have anything to say about the superwinch ATV 2000, or ATV 3000? What is the difference between a Superwinch LT 2000 and ATV 2000?

I have a warn3000 rt and have gotten good service out of it. Keep an eye on Northern Tool and you can pick up a good deal every now and then. Has anybody tried one of the new synthetic ropes? They are quite expensive. I broke my cable at the center and will have to replace it at some time soon, I think I will go back with cable, unless persuaded otherwise.

Seeing how you are from Ontario you know what Canadian Tire is, they have a Superwinch 3000lb with remote cable for an everyday low price of 145.00 taxes in and they go on sale once in a while for 110.00. I have one and used it with good luck so far. The best part it includes the mounting plate and farelead.

              Have a good one!
Ya ain't stuck til the winch cable comes out!!!

Just an FYI my EL Cheapo Harbor Freight has never let me down and has been submerged many times. I think this winch is just $69. I put it on planning on upgrading to a real nice Warn or something when I had about $600 or so I wanted to waste. So far I have no reason to replace it. I have been using it for 2 years now.

This winch has paid for itself over and over.

                - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

Opps. Look slike there asking $79 now.

                Happy trails

Rut, I have a friend that has a 1500# harbor freight winch, it is the one that comes w/ no roller fairlead-a must have btw- and comes with the no solenoid push button remote. We used the solenoids from an old warn and changed it over to a toggle switch that we mounted on his handlebars(on a quad). As far as I know he has used it w/o problems for 4 years now. Some of the HF stuff is well worth the money. After I got my Warn 300rt for $400, the wife saw a HF sale with the same winch as your link (I think) for about $70, long story short---It was't a happy time for a couple days know what I mean.

                  She's reading over my shoulder...ain't she...Gotta go

                    Thanks

Well, I guess i'm not the only one who has had winch worries. Thanks to you all for your advice. I'll keep my eyes and ears open and hoepfully come across a deal before the water gets high again, or the beavers get too industrious.

Yellowargo - yeah, that superwinch 3000 is advertised at CTC now for $300. I'll keep an eye on it and maybe as we get closer to the fall the price will drop. The one that fried was a 1500lb Superwinch made back when the dinosaurs ruled so I guess I can't complain about it failing too much.

Brushcutter - I have synthetic rope on my Warn Rockclimber that I use for emergencies with the Nissan Titan. Very strong, very easy to handle. A bit more concern with wear from running over abrasive surfaces, but you can buy/make sleeves for that. I like it.

RDR and Coosridgerider - thanks for the heads up on the Gorilla and Milemarker. I'll keep an eye out for the Gorilla. Warn is nice but the price has to fall - the wife will kill me if i put an expensive winch on the Max (its a '93)and the someone swipes it when I have it in the bush.

                    thanks again,

                    wilf
