Newbie with a 'BIG' question

Hi all. My name is Levi and I'm new to the forum. As a matter of fact, I'm new to AATV's. I have owned ATV's the majority of my adult life and I've ridden dirt bikes as a kid. I like the idea of the AATV and I always have. The only thing that kept me away was the speed. My 4x4 ATV has a top speed of 76mph but can't go nearly as many places as these vehicles, which is why I'm here. My BIG question is this. How much leg room do these vehicles actually have? I am 6'10" tall and I'm worried that I may not be able to fit in one comfortably. I have owned a Yamaha Rhino in the past but it was cramped and I don't want to do that again. So before I go any further into researching these things I need to know that answer. Thanks for any help yall can give and I look forward to your answers.

hey levi,
i'm 6'6" so i have a pretty good idea where your coming from. of all the machines i've Driven, the max II has the most legroom. it is actually quite comfortable for me, although i need to make longer sticks for it. i feel like i have to hunch over to drive it. my attex isn't bad, but not neat as roomy as the max. my argo sucks in the legroom department. mine is an 80's model, and the newer ones are a bit better. where are you located? perhaps you could meet up with some board members and try out some different machines

How do the Max II's compare to the other AATV's out there? Is it relatively the same in dependability, speed and other aspects? While I'm over here working I am planning on doing as much research and reading on the model I am gearing towards as I can. That way when I go home for good I will be ready.

IMO the Max IIs are a great AATV that has stood the test of time to be still in production. I had a pair years ago that got punished severely & I think they loved it. I'd venture to say they are one of the best bangs for your buck.

Another question you'll need to ask yourself is how much money you want to plunk down on a vehicle you may or may not end up liking. Racerone3 is correct in suggestion that your best bet is to try and hook up with a few owners so that you can try out a few different machines before buying. Are there any dealers in your neck of the woods? Give 'em a call and go for a test drive. I own a Max II and can tell you there's lots of room - especially if you're riding solo. You can stretch your legs out, sticking one up in each corner of the lower body tub for tons of space, although it won't end up being as roomy for you as you're a foot taller than I am. Regardless, welcome and good luck getting yourself an AATV. They aren't fast (at least the modern ones) but they sure are FUN!

Ok that sounds like a plan. I have never seen an AATV dealer around me but I will just have to drive so I can find one. Another thing I was looking at was getting a Max IV and moving the front seat back and taking the rear seat out and using it for cargo space. Thanks again for all of yalls help. I will see what I can find when I am back and go from there.

I own a couple of maxll and they do have a lot of leg room but not too comfortable with two riders,The seat is alot narrower than my argo and not as comfortable.The argo has a lot less leg room.The max4 would probably be your best bet.If you have never had a 6 wheeler you will really enjoy them they are a lot of fun and draw a lot of attention.Good luck.

You should also consider getting a lightly used Max IV and taking out the front bench seat and installing a single driver-only unit. I've seen this done by a fellow over on Route 6x6 using a tractor seat that had some suspension to it. Worked out great for him as it has a nice tall back with arm rests, suspension to help smooth out the bumps, and both of your passengers can put their legs on either side of your center seat. Worth looking into. (I was considering this option myself if I ever upsize to a Max IV.)

I am not sure if this is the exact article I was thinking of, as I recalled the tractor seat being a bit taller and having arm rests that rotated up out of the way... so it could have been another owner's build-up I was trying to remember. (The article in question was something I had read once over on Richard's Route6x6 site some 9 or 10 years ago!)

Anyhow, at least this guy's build page will give you the general idea for a single seat swap, and you can probably get yourself a taller and/or fancier seat if you wanted.

MightyMaxIV has some pictures of his Max IV done the same way here in the gallery. I am currently adding a suspension pedestal with a racing seat to my wife's Max IV and I have moved the seat back several inches. I am 6'-2" a stock Max IV is uncomfortable for me. Now I fit nicely.

There is a Hustler Bigfoot for sale on here that is not far from Texarkana. You might compare that to a Max IV. Member Mudbug3 is only an hour south of you, he is in Shreveport, he has both, Bigfoot and MaxIV. I live about 2 hours south of him, I have a 950, but at your size it would be totally out of the question without major modifications. Whereas the seat in a MaxIV can be redone in several ways and fairly easily at that.
