  • A thread about 6x6 comfort

Comparing a new Max IV to an new Argo 6x6 I have a few questions I cant find.

    1. Assuming you put on the largest tires the manufacturer offers which has more ground clearance?
    2. Which vehicle is more comfortable (leg room and overall space) with 4 adults in it (from driver point of view and passenger point of view)?
    3. Assuming you carry one other passenger which has more cargo room for camping gear?
    4. Which is smoother riding (as far as abuse from the bumps)
    5. Which can pull a loaded trailer better?
    6. With tracks on the vehicle which will go through snow better?
    7. Will either fit in the back of a standard bed of a truck?

    Thanks

This is quite alot to ask in one post. You might try posting it under the Max or Argo heading. I enjoy my Max IV but have no experience with any Argo so I'm no help.

yeah I know its a lot, furthermore very few people have both. When I said "new" I guess I really mean "newish" maybe 2000 or newer. I was hoping that people attending group rides got a chance to sit in the "other" machine and could comment on their initial impressions. There are plenty of Max Vs Argo comparisons on the internet but most deal with performance of the machine and durability of parts. I have read all those and am really wondering about the overall comfort of the machine.

The Max IV with the largest tires you can get (26") is going to be the least comfortable ride between the two. Those tires are just bone jarring although they are super fast in the water. If you compare the Max and Argo both with the same 25" rawhide III's though it will get a little better. However I still think the Argo will be the most comfortable (least jarring).

The seating position in the Max IV is what really makes every bump exaggerated since you sit over the front tires. As far as legroom both the Argo and the Max IV seem a little tight for me. I'm 6'-2". My knees hit the dash in the Max IV but my feet have nowhere to go in the Argo. I find the Argo's seat itself much more comfortable but I prefer the (little bit of) legroom of the Max IV.

If you have four adults to haul I would take the Max IV. If you have two adults and gear I would take the Argo.

Max IV has a load capacity of 800 lbs on land and 500 on water
Argo Frontier (and possibly Bigfoot?) has a load capacity of 700 lbs on land and 500 on water

The max IV can tow 1000lbs and the top of the line Frontier can tow 1400 lbs.

The Max IV is 56" wide and the Frontier is 58" wide. I know the Max IV will fit in the back of a pickup and possibly the Frontier too depending on how wide your bed is.

I think that answers most of your questions except #6. Both machines will have similar footprints although the Argo weighs 890 lbs compared to Max IV's 805 lbs. So the Max will have a slightly better (less) lbs./sq. inch footprint. Looking any further than that will just be controversial since you will be comparing transmissions from here on out. And for that, the best thing for you to do is drive both and see which one you like best. There are plenty of threads on here comparing the Argo and T20 transmissions.

This is exactly the type of info I was looking for. As you said there are plenty of threads about argo vs max transmissions and I have read those. It is interesting how the max and argo's compare in terms of "comfort". Even if you called one machine far superior in engine/tansmission/drivetrain but was far more uncomfortable, it doesnt make it the best machine in my mind.

Just remember, those are my opinions so take them at face value (at my house they aren't worth too much ). Others may have different experiences.

Since you are in AZ, you should head over to Whipper's place and try a Max for yourself. I believe one of his riding buddies has an Argo too that you could try?

He sent me a PM about that when I first joined the forum, very nice if him. I was to shy then but if the offer is still standing I would take him up on it.

I have a 1999 Max IV and a 2002 Argo Conquest 6x6. Its the older body style Argo, not the Frontier.
I think my Max IV rides better than the Argo, the Argo being nose heavy seems to hit every bump harder than the max does. My Max has the 26" Titans on it which are softer than the 26" Goodyears on the newer Max's.

There are so many differences between the 2 machines, its just about impossible to compare them. Best bet is to drive each of them for some extended time and different terrains.

It took me at least 20 hours with my first Attex to get the feel for the machine and at least 20 hours with the Max to get the feel for it and at least 20 hours with the Argo to get the feel for it.

A 5 minute drive in either machine is not really going to give you a good comparison.

The offer stands, Roadtorque. REB181 has a Hustler, Benrich has an Argo & Whipper & I take the springers. That's quite a potpourri of machines. We also have a stock Max II & Max IV that you are welcome to try. Sometimes we go riding spur of the moment & ,as you know, right now it's just too hot to be that much fun.

Lance... 20 hours??? ea. to get the feel for each? Are you sure? That's a long time.
