There are several ways that you can add suspended seats. Brushcutter is going to build a suspended front seat for my Max IV. To do this he will first build a different seat frame , and then make a suspended bench seat over it. We plan on using " harley solo seat " springs. These springs are progressively wound, and come in 2 " inch cylindrical , 3 " inch long tapered , 4 " inch tapered , and 5 " inch cylindrical , and 7 " inch tapered sizes. You can buy all of these springs from the Harley after market dealer " J & P Cycles " . Their number is 1-800-397-4844. We will be using the 5 " inch cylindrical size for my Max IV , and the 3 1/2 " inch long tapered size for his Hustler 950. He will use door hinges to allow the suspended bench seat to move freely up and down.
When I first built a suspended bench seat with the above components , using wood , this worked out even better than I,d hoped for.
We also figured out a way to build a suspended bench seat for either the Hustler 950 ,or the Hustler 980. This is VERY easy to do , and you get to use the stock seat frame. All you need to do is add two door hinges on either side of the front seat frame , use angle iron to acheive the proper tilt in the rear for the springs , and add two 3 1/2 inch solo seat springs for the suspension
When Brushcutter is finished build my Suspended seat and his, I will post some video of it in action. Pictures too.
Thanks Mudbug,I was thinking along the same line but not sure of what kind of springs to use or maybe one off those backhoe seat mounts with the flat coil steel.Let us know how it works out.I love these machines but they sure kill your back after a long ride.

The Carolina Boys use pain killers and a supply of cold beer to ease the back pain.

The suspension seat mock up that I built out of wood , works REALLY GOOD!
No more sore backs with this seat I can assure you.
Brushcutter and myself both sat side by side on the wood frame mock up that I built, and even with the combined weights of both of us , the bench seat was still slightly above level. In fact, the suspended bench seat still had more than half way to go before both five inch springs bottomed out. I weigh about 178 , and this suspension seat feels really cushy with five inches of seat foam. This is a " must have " for any one who owns a Max IV and likes to ride fast. This suspended seat will feel good if you,re riding slow or fast.
Sitting on this wood frame mock up ,and then bouncing up and down , is now like a night and day difference when compared to the factory non-suspended seat.

At the moment I still have,nt bought a digital camera , but I will post a close up video of the suspended bench seat ( when finished with metal ) ,and with some one sitting on it. This way you can see how easy the bench seat moves up and down. On this same video you,ll also see the parts of the suspended seat , and what makes it work.

If your looking for a good digital camera at a good price,The kodak easy share c160 is a great camera for around $90 at walmart.I bought one and love it,It takes great pictures and video. It comes with a Kodak easy share program disc.
I enlisted resident suspension seat experts Don and Evil8x8 when searching for a suspension seat for Jennifer. I wanted her to have a full racing seat with a 5 point harness and the easiest way to do that for me was to just purchase a lawn mower / tractor suspension seat pedestal. Don and Evil8x8 have both used these pedestals on their racers with good reviews. The downside is that they aren't cheap.
There are some very thin ones out there but I bid on Jennifer's on ebay and got a decent deal. It is a little thicker than others but it also has rails for adjusting the seat forward and backwards. I believe it is off of a John Deere tractor.
Most of the pedestals have tension adjustment on the springs to allow you to adjust the ride based on your weight. You can pick them up on ebay, tractor supply, or your local zero turn mower dealer but I saw the best prices on ebay. They aren't as cool as what mudbug or BW6 have done but they are a fairly simple way to get a little suspension.
One other thing that mudbug hit on is the cushion on the seat. A lot of our six wheelers come with very little foam and the foam that is there is worn and too soft. I really improved the ride in my Max II simply by upgrading to a thicker foam. Just a thought.
Here is Jennifer's suspension seat installed in her Max IV:
Right after I built my suspended seat ( out of wood ),I went to tractor supply , and sat on a tractor style seat with a suspended " pedestal " underneath it. Using the adjustment nob and adjusting this seat to my body weight, it still was 50 % less comfortable than the seat that I mocked up in wood. This is the very same seat that MightymaxIV has on his Max IV, and he just loves it.
But , when comparing both suspended seats, the one that I built is a whole lot more comfortable. This is because my seat allows for better comfort both up and down. All my seat needs is a very slight bounce to absorb impact , but the suspended tractor style seat needs a whole lot more impact before it will move with weight on it.
What I also like about the seat that Brushcutter will build for me, is that it will look almost stock when finished.
A GOOD CHEEEEEEEEP IDEA IS USING OLD RIDING LAWN MOWER SEATS WITH THE SPRINGS UNDER THEM
Also the new kubota zero turn mowers have an awsome air cushion seat (our mower seat is great it really helps the ride) they are way better seats bur pretty costly too. they have handles under them to adjust them from soft to firm
