Marc. it will just take a good bit of elbow grease. Start with 80 grit sandpaper and gradually work your way up to 1000 or 2000 grit wet sanding. Use a DA sander at first and then wet sand. Finish by waxing the body with any good car polish. Good luck with it.

Thanks for your answers and your help.
Is this chalky stuff only on the abs and not inside?
I fear that it will come back after sanding.

It's just on the surface. It'll come back.

It won't come back after sanding. Just keep it clean and waxed. The chalky ABS look is from years of oxidation from the Sun and UV rays.

it will eventually come back. more or less quickly depending on the amount of sun time the machine gets. my racer was looking pretty good at ashtabula in May, but just 4 months of sun exposure in NC had it oxodized again. this time it just took a little scotch brite to clean it up. i really need to get in indoors, and not just under an awning

Brian is right, it would come back........I wasn't thinking about leaving it out in the southern sun. If someone lives in the northeastern US, like Buffalo, NY there is such little sun, it would take quite a long time for the oxidation to come back. You Carolina folks get a lot more than a month or two of sunny days compared to the people in Upstate, NY.

Steve, it was just scotch brite... scotch and i don't get along too well anymore. wax helps, but even that is no match for the sun. my 01 Dodge got waxed regularly and still the paint blistered off the roof by 06 or 07... around here it's just a matter of keeping things covered as much as possible

Sorry, what I meant is the rich color will come back.

BTW, the chalky color will return if you don't wax it and leave it out in the elements.
