  • Travel tie down

    Hello all

Just wondering how to tie my six wheeler down properly. I have been using the four outside axel for tie down so far and have had no problems yet. will tieing it down like this hurt the bearings? It has a hitch on it and some grab handles, are these better to tie to? How about a big strap over the unit?

Tell me how you like to tie them down for hauling. Could be some other way that is better.

Might depend slightly on which brand/model you have and what you are transporting the amphib in / on, but as a general rule securing the machine using the axles as tiedown points is your best bet - IMHO. I have six 5000lb. D-ring anchor plates bolted to my trailer, two at front & rear and two in the middle along the outside planks. I use a couple of 10,000lb axle straps secured directly to the front two "D" anchors with big, threaded links. The rear of my Max is secured with rachet straps looped around each rear axle and connected to the rear corner anchor plates. For security I also have a thick Kryptonite cable lock looped around one of the center axles, down between two of the trailer planks and locked around the trailer's frame. That way, even in the unlikely event that all four axle ties downs were to somehow fail, the machine is still rigidly locked to the trailer. It might slide around some, but it wouldn't roll or bounce off.

Don't secure any straps over the body, as the HDPE will deform and depending how much you were 'donking' the straps you might ruin (crease) the tub, plus in an accident there's no guarantee the body wouldn't give enough to allow the straps to come loose and send your 6-wheeler flying.

    That's my $.02
