Do the 6x6's tear up yards compared to a four wheeler?
Do the 6x6's tear up yards compared to a four wheeler? My dads thinking about getting another four wheeler and im trying to talk him out of it, but he uses the four wheeler for hunting and yard work. He pulls a decent size mulch trailer around the yard with it and sometime hunting equipment.. He has a Polaris 400 2 stroke and it pulls it just fine and doesnt tear up the grass too bad at all. (So thats why he likes it) The concern he has is does an argo or max with an 18 hp brigs pull well?? Will they tear up my dads lawn because of extra tires and skid steering?? Please let me know your opinions. I dont want him wasting his money on another POS 4 wheeler. Thanks
Although a skid-steer CAN be driven without doing too much damage to lawns, it takes practice & a gentle hand on the sticks. If you're new to these machines or you forget where you're at and you yank the sticks and/or gun the throttle then you will tear the holy hell out of any soft surface - especially grassy areas. I can easily chew up even my heavily packed gravel driveway without half trying. Skid-steer machines are very unforgiving in this respect.
The simplest thing to do is to delegate your garden tractor (or quad) for lawn-based chores and assign the 6x6 for all woods & field duties. So you can still justify getting a 6x6, just keep it off the lawn.
A lot depends on the tires you're running on your skid-steer as well. The original style chevron ribbed tires that were designed to slide sideways don't tend to tear up the sod as much as the knobbies or heavier lug treads. If you run Vampires, stay out of the grass or your wife yells a lot.
Stuck in the seventies- not in the swamp.

I run my Argo ALL over the yard at home, all the time, with a trailer and without. You DON'T have to "SKID" one side to turn, just slow that side down (No skiding involved). My yard is NOT torn up, and I would actually challenge you to tell me where I have driven and where I have not.
Of course you can tear it up, burning donuts and such, but you can do that with a quad as well. A little bit of care with what you are doing is all it takes
Personally, I think I see more damage done to our local trails from quads than from AATV's. Deeper holes and ruts cut by machines that just can't make it

I have an Argo 6x6 Bigfoot & to further answer Larry`s reply, I agree fully w/him regarding your lawn, however I `ll tell you, that my Bigfoot can tow almost as well as my 60 hp. 4x4 Kubota farm tractor, maybe even better, especially when I`m out cutting firewood down in the swamps behind my house.
The thing just keeps going!!, even tows a 16ft landscape trailer fully loaded with almost 2cords of logs thru almost a foot of new snow.
