  • How to fix cracks and holes

Hey Everyone.. So we are about to take the frame out of my early - mid 70's argo 6x6 and I know I have some plastic work to do both structual and cosmetic. Does anyone know what type of material the plastic is? ABS? I am good with fiberglass and resin but not too sure if it will stick to the plastic very well.

ANy ideas would be great! We got the old kohler 400cc 2 stroke motore rebuilt and running like a charm so now bidy work time and frame frixing (some rot in it). Might even fab a new frame. We'll see how much nerve I have.

    Thanks all!

    argo body work

The Argo body should be HDPE. I have lots of spare pieces, so I just cut a thin strip and used an electric soldering gun to melt it in to the holes. I worked some in from both sides and it worked pretty good. I only had one short crack to repair so I "V"ed it out first, and then filled it in.

Not sure when they changed but I do know the earlier argos where abs in which case acetone will melt the finish if you dab some on it. If it is abs you need to get a can and put some donor abs in it and pour some acetone and it will get a goopy paste like and you can apply that like you would bondo or what ever and then the acetone evaps leaving the plastic to harden like new. It take some time getting use to though because the acetone bubbles trapped in the plastic leave little holes and you need to get it to dry out inside first. Keep applying acetone with a brush on the outer layer to get it to stay soft. If the acetone test proves no reaction it is a hdpe body or poly body and evil8x8 has some advise/tips here.......http://www.6x6world.com/forums/gener...dy-repair.html
There are plastic welder kits or you can use donor plastic form buckets or ..... and soldering iron.
