  • Battery near gas tank?

I am rebuilding some terra tigers and installing electric start JLO's in each. I am tearing out the floors and replacing them with marine grade plywood. I also intend to run conduit inside the floor to run the gas line through. There is not a whole lot of room in the Terra Tigers for a battery in front, but there is ample room to mount one in back. The only problem is that it will be sitting in close proximity to the gas tank. I would also run the battery wires though the conduit.

Is this inadvisable? Is there danger of fumes being ignited? I mean, I know there are odds of just about anything happening, so I guess I am asking HOW MUCH danger there is? Do other models have the gas tank and battery in close proximity? Are there additional precautions that can be taken (i.e. a battery cover, etc?

    Thanks in advance as always.

the only time that there should be any spark from the battery is when you hook it up, or unhook it. make your gas tank fairly easily removable, so that you can pull it out whenever your making battery connections. or put a master switch in one of the battery cables so that you can break the circuit away from the battery before you make connections. JEGS 10375 JEGS Water Resistant Master Disconnect i would also run 3 pieces of conduit. one for fuel, and seperate ones for your 2 battery wires. you don't want the battery cables bound together in a tight tube where they can chafe each other.

Actually your battery is far more dangerous than the fuel tank. Only in the movies and on ford pinto's do gas tanks explode. Liquid gas catches on fire. Batteries however produce hydrogen gas- very explosive- read the warning label on the battery! That said, the fuel tank area is the best place for that battery. Here's some pics of how I did mine.....and link to video. http://www.6x6world.com/forums/aatvs...r-reverse.html

I plan to have the copper fuel line run inside the conduit so that if it ever breaks off, I can re-feed another fuel line though the conduit. However, I got to thinking that maybe the better option is solid steel piping. Again, this will run from the back of the Terra Tiger to the front and be encased in fiberglass. I do not know HOW much these machines flex. Does anyone have input on whether to use flexible conduit vs solid pipe? It may be hard to feed the fuel line through the flexible conduit now that I think about it.

I would not use copper tubing as a fuel line, go to the parts stores and buy the rubberized type. This just my opinion. The flexing however small will anneal the copper and it will break. The rubberized fuel line is what autos and atv's use.
