I will agree on using a snatch block to increase the pulling power of your winch . I think this is a smart move myself . Another thing I have used with great success , when the tree I needed to winch from was either too far away , or at the wrong angle, is a Pul-pal .

This works when there is no tree in sight , too far away, or at the wrong angle to winch from . In thick mud and sand , the pul-pal is the tool to have . I saw a picture of a land rover stuck coming out of some really THICK MUD
and he extracted himself out with three pul-pals .One on the left and one on the right side of the land rover, and one straight in front. The Army rangers use these too.

        viper

i went with the viper 3000 with synthetic rope.stronger than steel cable, dosnt conduct heat or cold, floats, has a dead drop no recoil if breaks or conection point fails and no more splinters also wont kink or distort from repeated up and down in same location during plowing.the one i got was $209 with shipping.its waterproof along with sealed handlebar thumb switch and sealed 12' remote.the aluminum fairlead is feather light compared to rollers and was easy to stop water from splashing in with rubber cable stop, also stops cable end from rattleing aroud. i'm divorced twice haha so price wasnt an issue for me but its still much cheaper than a warn. eBay Motors: VIPER Max 3000lb ATV Winch w/Amsteel SYNTHETIC & Hawse (item 320211705054 end time Jan-27-08 16:33:03 PST)
