I will agree on using a snatch block to increase the pulling power of your winch . I think this is a smart move myself .
Another thing I have used with great success , when the tree I needed to winch from was either too far away , or at the wrong angle, is a Pul-pal .
This works when there is no tree in sight , too far away, or at the wrong angle to winch from . In thick mud and sand , the pul-pal is the tool to have . I saw a picture of a land rover stuck coming out of some really THICK MUD
and he extracted himself out with three pul-pals .One on the left and one on the right side of the land rover, and one straight in front. The Army rangers use these too.
