  • Soaking used chains in diesel fuel?

Winter is coming, and that means no more progress on my restorations until spring. I have some used chains that appear to be in decent shape. A buddy torl me that if I soak them in diesel fule over the winter, they will be in great condition by spring. Does anyone else soak their chains in diesel to loosen them up? Pro's and con's?

If they are rusty I doubt anything will save them....toss em! If they are dirty and greasy, it should clean them. I would soak them in oil, like chainsaw chain oil before reinstalling.

Any kind of lubricant would be fine. I wouldn't just leave them submersed in lube over the winter. Just give them a good coating and you should be fine. (90wt oil works good too)
It's all just nuts and bolts.
