I recently returned from a month in Alaska. My son and I took the trip as his college graduation ( Geology) for several reasons. One was for him to look for work and the fun part was salmon fishing and moose hunting. We hauled up two 4 wheelers from Central Washington State to Valdez and stayed with a friend who has a RV camp and charter fishing business. We helped at his camp and fished when he had space available and when the salmon season shut down we went moose hunting. The weather did not cooperate where we were (too warm) and we did not get a moose which leads me to the basis of my post. (Yes I can be a bit long winded).
I spoke to a lot of hunters while up there and this year I noticed one thing and that is that there was a lot more success when the hunters were using amphibious atv's, and in most cases Argos. Of course, my friend Tim (RV park owner) called all of them Argos. The guys I talked to went into some large swampy areas and had good success. Now I am looking at buying one or maybe even two of them. I will be looking at used machines and have been looking on a daily basis for something near at hand.
I want some advice about travel in swamp areas. It looks like I would be far better off with those tracks that fit over the wheels. I know I got stuck once with my 4 wheeler and had to got winched out by a friend from Anchorage and see the need for the winch. I also see the winch as fairly useless if you are stuck in some tundra with no trees around and no other machine at hand. It therefore seems like it would be foolish to go in there with just one machine. How much fuel do you take on a trip like this? Imagine I can figure that out and make caches of fuel along the way. I can imagine a trailer is handy to haul stuff and saw a lot of those behind 4 wheelers.
I am thinking right now of using a 6x6 mainly for hunting. In Washington state there are few places they allow trail rididng with motorized vehicles. Watching the videos make them look like a lot of fun and pretty adictive.
I am looking for any advice. Don't know what kind of machine I am looking for right now but will look for advice on that later. Love this site and look through it a couple of time a day - I am retired so I can get away with it.
