  • Chain tensioners-check this out

    Hey guys,

I came across this link when looking for chain tensioners, ya'll think this might work on an AATV? Also check out the teflon wear strips, they look perfect to go on the frame rails where the chain invariably hits....

Scott, thanks for posting this link up. I know that many people will appreciate this, especially Hustler owners. Im not sure why they never put some teflon chain sliders above the frame rails where the chain rubs on it. I know that on my Yamaha sport bike as well as many others there is a teflon slider so the chain doesnt hit on the rear swing arm. It works very well too. Time to order some of these!

You can buy chunks of Teflon at McMaster Carr.

Yeah, you could even cut up a kitchen cutting board....but what about those chain tensioners that kinda sandwich the chain? Think that would actually work?

yep.. for sure it'll work! The price might be expensive though...

Another product out there is something called the Roll Ring. I ordered one for $80/CAN and tried it out in my Prairie Bobcat. It worked great, but I didn't have enough clearance between the two sprockets so when I kicked it in high rpm the Roll Ring went oval (normal operation) and snagged the teeth on one of the sprockets (bad implementation on my part).

But when it was working it really smoothed things up.

Here's the link for the Roll Ring with some video footage:

I saw that roll ring on Matt Oxender's Mudd Ox 8x8 that was at the Humphrey, NY ride a couple months back. It looked like it worked really well.

Both of those products look promising!
I'm going to check into them for the Frontier. I'm getting tired of the chain slapping the floor board!

Am I alone here? Are there any others with Frontiers that have the same problem? Bigfoots? (Bigfeet?)

Do you think that roll ring would stay in place all the time? It looks like debris could easily knock it out if it made it into the tub. That looks very promising though.

The ring would be susceptible to debris if it were to get on the chain (a little branch or some thick mud or something) then again... who forgot to put the chain cover on?? :P The nice thing is the replacement time and the simpleness of it... plug it in and go..

I'm thinking these could probably be punched out of old tires for a poor mans roll ring. I might play with this to see how easy it would be to do... I know when my roll ring broke, I said screw it to buying another one... but if these things could be $5 or so, I'd put em on every chained machine I had :P

                    Thanks Beeman,

How much is 80 bucks Canadian though? Looks simple and effective. I will try and call the guys in the link I posted soon and get some prices.

Well, about a month ago 80 CAN would've been around 84 USD... but I think it's about the same now.

Ohhh...that's kinda expensive. I had forgotten about the Canadian dollar taking over the US dollar. Too bad it's not in Philippine Pesos..............

I just called the Snapidle people...Fastenal is my local dealer for them, so next week I will get with my contact there. I believe they said Motion also carries them.

The engineer told me that they had fitted AATV's with the chain tensioners, but he did not know how well they worked, but he said nobody returned upset.

                          One interesting tidbit...they are speed rated. 800 ft/min dry, 1800 ft/min lubed.
