  • Mechanical 'First Aid Kit' - What are your recommendations

Good day all... Fairly new to the group here so I would like to ask for a bit of advice.

Basically, I am wondering what you folks might recommend as the contents of a 'mechanical first aid' or break down kit. What are the 'must have' items, and what are the 'should have' items.

I have a mid-size tool box that I will be carrying with me that will have common size wrenches, pliers, crescent wrench, hammer, (flat tip) round punch, spare roll pins (minimum 4), spare belt... Any other items you would suggest??

    Regards and Merry Christmas all...

chain breaker, master links, length of whatever size chain your machine uses. flashlight. spares of whatever holds your sprockets to the axle (bolt, roll pins.. nothing if they are splined.) rags, ether, lighter and an air pump to reseat broken beads. tow straps...

i carry a small duffel bag on my machines. all hand tools get rolled in a towel, as does the air pump, and the flashlight. chain and associated parts along with axle bolts are in one of the end pockets. stuff in the tow straps, a roll of duct tape, and a few spare rags.

ether usually rides in one of the cup holders in the machine. i like to keep it in easy reach. ether is really handy stuff. great hand cleaner. starts engines. reseats beads, and kills fire ants instantly!!!

The best thing to have....is a tow strap and a buddy with his machine riding with you. Especially when it's a long walk home. Broken down in a remote area this time of year could be a real safty hazzard.....don't go out alone.

Here is a link to a similar thread where I did my best to list what I cary for spare parts and tools. I was at work at the time, and so was working off memory but I think I covered most of it. These tools/parts are for my Argo's

I travel some pretty long distances out in the bush and am quite often alone, or just have my family with me so my parts/tool lists are a bit extreme

If you are really going out in the boonies, consider a personal survival kit along with some fire starter, space blanket, flashlight, wet napkins, a quality Multitool, and a spare set of gloves, first aid kit with some Neosporin, etc. Duct tape is always good for some repairs as well as extra drain plugs for the hull. A small roll of parachute cord is worthwhile. The main drive belt is fairly sturdy, but if yours is showing some age, consider replacing it and carrying the old one for a spare.

Livingsky, you have a good start on your "MUST HAVE" kit. You might want to add the following: Duct tape, Chain master links, a good lenth of mechanics/bailing wire, ( I keep 10 feet) Spare fuses if your machine uses any, pencil and small paper tablet, simple compass, tow strap or cable, small vice grips, small tree saw, (The kind that folds to under 12 inches in length) small folding shovel, a cheap wind-up falshlight, (The one I have is smaller than a cigarette lighter and only costs about 3 bucks from local hardware store.) nylon wire ties, short bungie chords (2), spare hose clamps, spare springs (For throttle etc..). and small assortment of common nuts and bolts/washers. With the exception of the shovel and cable, I keep all my stuff in an old ammo box that measures 12x6x8. And of course, you must have your seperate first aid kit, which should include a small mirror and waterproof matches or fire starter stick. And if at all possible, take a cellphone with you when you go.
It's all just nuts and bolts.

Thanks all, I| found a great thread at 'Emergancy Supplys'. they go into both equipment as well as personal emergency supplies.

As far as personnal supplies, I have no problem with that as SAR is part of my regular work. It was just the equipment stuff.... and you guys have given me some great pointers. thank you.
