  • Is it possible to TOW A 6X6 BEHIND A BOAT in a bay to bring to an island for 6x6ing?

Ok i'm new here & this question will probably make me look a little crazy in the eyes of fellow 6x6'ers here, but please hear me out & give honest suggestions!

I live in heavily suburban Long Island, NY.. ATV'ing of any kind is taboo here, strictly verboten! an impoundable offense! - I own a 99' MAX II that i just picked up used in great condition..

I dont own land anywhere else & dont know anyone with land, so that makes my options for the MAX pretty slim at this point..

However I DO know the bay here & I do know there are a few abandoned dredge islands in the bay that noone bothers with, that would make great land for 6x6ing..
Only problem is getting the 6x6 there.. The MAX is amphibious but it would be silly to think I can cross the bay with it in such a way.. However the MAX does float like a boat! - My question to the 6x6 community is do you think an empty unladen 6x6 towed behind a boat could be a feasible option?? - Is the bouyancy sufficient so that it can handle a boat wake or two on the way to it's destination?? - I know this is an "outside the box" idea, but trust me, where i am, this is a very viable option..

What is the input of the 6x6 community on this? foolish or feasible?
ANy input i would greatly appreciate!

Unless the bay is completely flat, wake-free (i.e. no other boats), and the towing speed does not exceed 4-5 knots you will most likely flip it.

Not to mention what the salt water would do to your axles and bearings...

I agree the salt water will require RELIGIOUS greasing of bearings, and you'll still get corrosion if it's not completely dried constantly, but they ARE quite stable in the water. I don't think wakes will easily flip it but from the heavy traffic I've seen las time I was out L.I. way on my boat, it MAY get swamped. I also agree that towing at more than a slow pace would be bad. You'll need a good setup for towing, it's a tremendous strain on the tow ring and where ever it is attached to the anphib (or whatever is being towed.)

Ahhh yes good point about the salt water! - it would literally tearup & corrode anything metal on the MAX... the towing would be the easy part I am thinking if the MAX is stable in the water, it would need to be very calm definitely.. Hmmmm the whole salt water thing is a deal breaker in regards to my idea :/ - Thanks for the input!

or if you have access to the water with a place to leave a dock, make the dock large enough for the 6x6. with a covered outboard support, you "undock" the dock and sail the floating dock to the island

it's in french but you will get the idea from the pictures

Not to put a damper on your plans, I know sum of the man-made islands are now protected by the DEC as a wild life sanctuary and any human interaction is forbidden. you should check this out befor going.

BW6, that's awesome. Civilian landing craft that can also be towed? OK, I am truly impressed with that. Not sure if it's a big market or not, but impressive none-the-less!

Haaa thanks for the inpute, yeah alot of good points! - most importantly i dont know anyone sho brings a MAX into salt water, thats just a scary prospect corrosion-wise.. MAX made only for fresh water lakes & ponds.. salt-water would destroy a MAX i am feeling.
