argo vs maxIV

I own both-A MaxIV and an Argo Frontier with Adair tracks-The Max is a great machine, fun to drive and more controllable with a T-20, but I have seen no machine other than another Argo with Adair tracks or a Mud Ox with Adair tracks that can follow my Frontier. I have walked through holes and swamp area that would stick my max ten times over and not been close to being stuck with my Argo. I am sure that a lot of this is the tracks but I enjoy the self adjusting chains and the ease of maintenance with my Argo. In my opinion the Admiral has several short comings that I have already posted on this forum, but this machine gets the job done.

As Noel has already stated each machine shines In certain areas. I have yet to see one machine that can out perform everyone else at everything-one machine always shines in certain areas, 8x8 for work, 6x6 in tight areas, Argos with there low range work horse gearing, max for their control, give a little, take a little.

The swimming trophy probably belongs to the Swamp Fox with Terra tires.

As well built as the Argo is it pales when compared to a Mudd Ox-If you need someone to tow you back to camp or to pull you out of hole the preference is a Mudd Ox.

Watch the latest River Run post- you'll get to see two MaxII with tracks, One with tires, Argo frontiers with tracks and tires, Argo Bigfoot with tracks, and get to watch how each machines performs, every machine had an advantage under certain circumstances.

I think we should all enjoy our machines and marvel at what each machine does best.

This is exactly what BW6 did when he built BW1 and BW11. There was no amphib offered for sale that was built exactly the way Ray Kolis wanted it to be, so he used the best engineering idea,s on the machines now offered sale, and built an amphib that suited him. Hats off to you Ray Kolis !

Hey thanks, Mudbug3. I do build my own, and probably enjoy the building process as much as riding. But it is not for everyone. I think my main motivation is not to build the "badest" machine out there, but to try different ideas that no one else has tried (to my knowledge). This is my personal quest to advance the sport. That is why I readily share info with members. It's too bad our hobby attracts such low numbers when compared to ATV's or UTV's. If the market was there they would be into it. Hat's off to Mike (6x6World) for this forum, a place to share our experiences and knowledge!

If you watch the Video posted on the homepage, you will see 2 Max II's, Max IV, Argo Bigfoot (6x6) and a Hustler Bigfoot. We all went the same places all day long, and EVERY machine had to get the winch hooked to it MULTIPLE times. None of them are perfect... all do some things better than others. A lot more of it comes down to the driver. you have to know what your machine will do, and how to make it do what it won't. I'm pretty sure I couldn't hop in McCoys argo and make it go all the places he does on the first try, simply because I don't know the machine too well. Same thing If he were to get in one of my machines.

I guess because of the tires. The rawhide 111 aren't the best. With the maxIV i pulled a 14 foot aluminum boat with 5 adults in it with no problem. There is now way I could do that with my argo.
PS: I just can't remember if I had the conquest or the response at that time ( around 2004)

me gus marrone and keith(onlyonce) went 6x6ing yesterday to a plcae with very steep hills that enter directly into pongs then straight back up hills there is no way your could of followed us down into the water with an argo you would of sunk it

I prefer my Argo 6x6 for swamp and not so technical terrain. I prefer my Max IV for the majority of the riding I do. If I had an 8x8, I would trust it more on the hills than I do the 6x6. The Max IV rides better than the Argo( not as bumpy and jerky on the trails), but no where near the ride quality of a Max II. I guess if I could trade my 6x6 Argo for a new HDI 8x8 and trade the Max IV for a Max II, I would be very happy.

I don't know about the argo 6X6 since I only had 8X8's (3). I agree that the max IV rides better than the argo 8X8 but when it comes time to get a moose out of a beaver pond with the maxIV I've had trouble sinking it because too much weight in the back. I also had trouble going over a beaver dam with a moose in it. If I try to go over it slow and miss it I didn't have anough power, the belt was sqeasing. I was in the same spot the year before with a bigger moose in the argo and I could stop in the middle of the hill and start again with no problem. If the MaxIV could have a low gear it would be great.
With all that being said I agree that the MAXIV is very good machine but I enjoyed it more to have fun with than working with it. I guess every machine have its goods and bads.

I live in Pennsylvania. If there's a moose in the back of my machine, I have bigger issues.

I live in Québec, canada. that's where I had more trouble is with a max loaded with a moose. I also had problem when loaded with pieces of wood going underneat the skid plate because it's in 2 parts. But like I said, to play in the mud the MAXIV is a good machine.

if you live in Quebec, then your worst problem is getting spare parts for your Max ....
