  • Thinking about getting a used 6x6,anywhere to go in N.E. Ohio?

Well I joined here a while back when I was thinking about getting one of these, but plans changed and I ended up getting a boat. I like my boat just fine, but my family dont care for life on the water and it rarely gets used and is expensive,to dock, storage, gas, winterize, long story short Boats are expensive rather you use them or not.
This past weekend we took a trip to see my brother/sister in laws in Kentucky and they had some 4 wheelers and a little bit of land,so me and my 10yr old son went riding around and he just loved it,and I have to say I had a great time too.
So I was thinking of selling my boat and getting us some toys,I figure we both can have some fun and also use them in the winter.
I owned a 4 wheeler before and I just think these amphibious things are very cool and I would be willing to try one,but I would be buying used.
So my question is what brand to get,I figure my price range would be around $5,000,so who makes a good solid 6x6, easy to repair, get parts, reliable etc.?
Another thing is,Is there any clubs, get togethers, open places to ride in N.E. ohio?
Im in Eastlake "very close to cleveland" mentor, kirtland, willougby, anybody own one and ride near here?

I'd suggest a Max. They're easy to work on, lots of parts are available, and they're still made today......right up the lake from you actually in Buffalo, NY. For $5000 you can get a really nice used machine. There are a lot of members in the Northeast, especially from the Ohio, PA, NY area. One of the biggest and best 6x6 events is actually held in Ashtabula, OH every year. This is just the tip of the iceberg, so I'm sure others will be sure to chime in.

+1 on what JPSWIFT1 said. For $5000 you should be able to pick up a newer, extremely clean, lightly-used MAX IV. With that rig you'll be able to take the whole family on some really fun excursions into the back woods. It's a great way to bond and with a little training and practice, everyone in your clan can become proficient piloting the machine. They are very simple and straightforward, both to operate and to service. Basically lawn mower engines power most of the machines made in the last 20 years, so parts for them (and spunky performance upgrades) are readily available.

Start checking eBay and Craigslist, doing serches for "MAX IV" and "amphibious." If you've lurked here for a bit you know that 6x6world automatically post ebay auctions, and several members here comb the various sale websites and post links for amphibs found in those places, as well. Good luck!!!

I been looking around,I found one but it seems to to good to be true, but what do I know. Locally there is a 2007 argo EFI Avenger 8x8 with tracks and a windshield great shape with 250 hours on it for under 5k,Sound like a great deal or about average?
I seen some on ebay similar to this and people wanted over 10k so makes me wonder?
I emailed the guy asking a question and havent heard back now going on the 2nd day,so who knows whats up.
So what do guys think about 6 vs 8 wheels? advantages, disadvantages. I would say a 8x8 would be right up my alley but I could see it being to bulky and added exspense with tires, and I would want some tracks for it etc. So what do you think?
Also could someone give me some average weight and size dimentions of one of these atv's? I was wondering how I would take it anywhere,im assuming I would need a little trailer for it,but is it possible to put it right in the back of a truck?
I read a few posts of argo vs max and it seem to go back and forth,I liked the looks of them both so maybe I will ask who has more and the better accessories and custom kits available. Im sure both have what im looking for,but when it comes down to it who makes better tracks, and canvases and I will for sure be getting a plow for my driveway,so that is a must.

          Hey PoD,

The 2007 Avenger scam on Craigslist (probably where you saw it, right?) has been going on for a long time. It, and more like it pop up all over the country. I'd tell you that if loaded 2007 Avengers were going for $5000, even **I'd** own one.

Hey ProfitOfDoom, we'll have to hook up some time. Talking is a much more efficient form of conversing than typing, for me anyhow, lol. I live in Cleveland,I work in Eastlake, have for over 30 years,I'm sitting on Lakeland Blvd presently.Post up something and perhaps we can meet at W-M or somewhere and BS.

              Joe.

Could anyone give some general info on these,This is a ball park type questions since there are so many years makes and models,But what is the overall size of one of these and weight of one?
Also are these pretty reliable,or do they tend to break down more then you like?
Could someone link me to I guess you could call it accessorie websites, somewhere to buy all the fancy things for your 6x6.
I would like to see all the cool things you could put in these things.

The coolest accessories are the custom made ones.....I saw a maxII on craigslist with a custom rack for bowfishing, I'm thinking of stealing the idea.

Here's the link to Recreatives Industries MAX ATV website:
                      Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511

Look around and it should give you all the info and stats you'll need. Generally speaking, you can pick up a used Max for less than a comparable Argo. Depends on where you live, though. Midwest & east coast will likely have more for sale. If you can work on a lawn mower engine and do the most elementary of maintenence (lube & adjust chains, grease zerk fittings, etc.) and keep the machine CLEAN then you'll love 'em. Obviously a cleaner rig will last longer and be more trouble-free than one that's dirty and left to rust out.
