  • Registering and Licensing an AATV in Ontario

    Hi All,
a lot of us in Ontario are going throught h#ll trying to figure out if we do have to register/plate/insure our Argos, Max's etc.
    - If anyone wants a quick and dirty on the rules, let me know. Our Staff Sgt. was good enough to send me the fact sheet he uses to brief his constables before sending them out into the field.
-Dealing with the MTO can be painful- the short VIN on a Max coupled with their lack of knowledge of these machines makes registration a really bad experience. You can get around this by filing an affidavit and it does not cost you money - MTO can stamp the affidavit. I have the one i used here if anyone wants to see what is involved.
-insurance is the worst part of it all. I'm still working on this and am frustrated to the MAX. If anyone has a lead on a company i can deal with, let me know PLEASE!!!! Ihave had this many rejections since I hit puberty.

I would be interested in seeing the fact sheet as used by the OPP in your area.... There is no doubt in my mind that an Argo fits the definition of an Off Road Vehicle pursuant to the Ontario law... I can not see how we could go without registration or insurance.

PS. Look up TDInsurance (Toronto Dominion Bank) they have an online quote system that allowed me to enter an Argo Response for a quote. On phoning them this morning to see if I could proceed, they chocked up on the 7 digit serial number. I am now awaiting their call.

PSPS: I had no trouble with Motor Vehicle Branch registering the Argo......They simply took the information from the previous Quebec registration, took $1000.00 in HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and I was out the door.

        hi all,

sorry, was out in the bush for a few days. i'm not sure how to post the opp fact sheet right now...will look into this more and try to post later today. Your comment on the short VIN number reminded me...I called RI just to see if they ever addressed the short VIN issue. a very nice lady there gave me a 17 digit number. basically it just puts your make nd model details in before your serial number in one nice long chain. I provided both to insurance brokers and they didn't flinch. Still haven't got insurance yet though....I will try the TD route. so far, i can get insurance, but only by having my auto increase significantly (like, $600). If anyone else has someone to recommend for insurance, i'd really like to hear it. I'm getting desparate here!

i found aviva to be best for insurance for me i had to give them my house and auto policy before they would take it though, this was fine for me because both got cheaper from the previous company but may not work out for you. i think my argo (2011 750 hdi) insurance is about 350 a year full cover but they put a water exculsion on it so if i sink it im not covered. this is the only way they would go for it. kind of bull**** but only way i could find around it

Thanks, Dromas. Any chance you could tell me the name or your insurance broker? So far, every broker i have spoken to has quoted me increases of $680 to $987 in my combined auto and atv. ATV quote comes in reasonable, but boy, do they kill me on my auto. I pay now $1718 for a 2004 Nissan Titan and 2004 Honda Odyessey. They jack these prices right through the roof,a nd then tell me they have a good deal on the atv insurance ($182, $304, $137....) Ain't much of a deal if insuring my toy costs more on vehicle AND puts the wife on the warpath!

TDInsurance has responded to my request for insurance on the 2000 Response....... they want a 17 digit vin....or no go...they went on to say that 7 digits is ILLEGAL
I have contacted ODG by phone..... to see what is up with the serial numbers..... they (he) not aware that 7 digit is causing problems. ODG to get back to me on serial number info.

THanks, Dromas. Will contact them Monday. I think we have a local agent here too for that group but he said he couldn't help. Just want this done so i can take some time in bush and not have to worry about it. I have an isolated hunt camp near Foleyet, and on the Labour Day weekend we rec'd the first visit from MNR in about 10 years. Two CO's checking things out before the Silly Season starts i guess. I had Shrek (Max IV) apart 'cause of carb problem. One CO notices the ATV licence plate on the engine cover by helmet lying on the ground and says that it's good to see that we are following all the rules and taking safety seriously. I just nodded and grinned like an idiot. Heck, i've never worn a helmet, just licensed the Max and was praying like a demon that he wouldn't ask for insurance! Then the two kids ran by swinging their machetes and screaming and the CO moved on to other issues. He probably heard the banjo's playing in the background and decided to leave while the leaving was good.

who carries TD insurance?is it primmum?i have everything insured through primmum except the argo.they would not cover it because of the amphibious classification.had a bugger of a time getting it insured.theres a member here from ontario that got cheap insurance through either state farm or farmers insurance.

I tried State Farm out of Barrie. An ATV dealer here had good luck with them in the past. They were willing to take me, but auto insurance would have gone up almost $3200..currently paying $1718. House insurance too would have been much higher. Similar story with other brokers. Not sure, but i think one broker told me Primmum won't insure amphibs. THis is frigging frustrating. And dealers i have spoken to insist these machines don't have to be insured, registered, etc. I doubt we'll have much luck changing the situation without the dealers.

Um...i found on the Argo site something that said the manufacturer was working with an insurer to make sure users get coverage. Anybody else hear about this? ANy chance this could happen in Canada?

man thats nasty.i got insurance through same company we have house and hunt camp with.(not primmum)
real pain in the ass switching stuff around but i made it work.and yes in ontario these machines must be registered and insured unless its your own private property.

thanks, Plott hound. I tried state Farm through an agent in Barrie. Don't know for sure if it was State Frm she was proposing to hook me up with, but no matter. Again - i could get insurance but my auto would go up to $3200 from $1700. Wifely won't let that pig fly!

Hello Dromas...... I tried the 1-800 number you listed however it comes back as unavailable. Do you have another number for either Bev or Tasha in Dryden... I can only find a Thunder Bay number.

                              thanks
