Why is there such a price difference between the Argo and the Max aatv? Is it because of quality, ability, or is it just Argo cost more?

  • #2
are you sure there's so much price difference ?

the Max IV 6x6 with the 18hp and the 26" tires is 11640$

    a baseline 18hp argo 6x6 with the frontier 24" tires is 10650$
    2011 Yellow 580 6x6

so to me it sounds like it's pretty much the same price.

you can't compare a baseline Max II with an Argo HDI-SE

Smog is pretty much right......MaxII's do tend to lose alot of value, but I think thats more supply/demand driven. Alot of them are bought new because they are the least expensive model, but the used market buyers seem to want more passenger/cargo room. Or perhaps it isn't the quantitty of maxIIs, its the buyers remorse of "I should have bought the bigger model"
As far as "better"...I'm going to make a few people mad here, but there really isn't a lot of difference. Similar axles, similar bearings, similar chains, similar motors...the big thing is the trans. You just can't beat a t-20, too bad R.I. wont share....when does that patent run out? LOL

I really don't think it is a patent issue, but more likely a production license issue. Hustler had a license to produce the t-20 but under the name "Skid Steer Corporation of America". Either-way, ODG has the Admiral Transmission which is a triple-differential and the brake steer of the older models. Both are fine transmissions, otherwise they would have gone away by now.

That's funny, I've also read it as COW HATER. Sometimes the white on black is hard for my young eyes to read

Base comparable vehicles are close. By the time you add the most popular accessories the price spread is greater. I tell people to touch and drive both before purchasing. I prefer the T20 for drive ability. I priced a complete Admiral transmission last week,4k+. Hope this helps

Sorry for the late response, I am in Winterpark CO skiing with the wife and kids. In the south if you get something wrong it is called eating Crow. I hate eating Crow so thus the name "Crowhater". As and oilfield supply sales person if I say it will be there and it does not show up I end up eating a bunch of Crow. I also love to hunt Crows when duck season is closed. Crows are a very smart bird and are very hard to hunt once you shoot a couple.

As for the aatv question I was speaking of used. Which model has the T-20 transmission and is is a good thing?

MAX has the t20 Argo uses there own transmissions. The t 20 is A very good unit with very smooth operation.

The three max models built by recreative industires have the T-20s and yes, most people consider it a good thing. It is a proven transmission that has been around a long time.

Here is a very recent thread about a hustler with a t-20. http://www.6x6world.com/forums/hustl...ft-levers.html
Also watch LarryW's "how to" video. http://www.6x6world.com/forums/conte...t-shifter.html

The old style Argo trans is a differential type...if one side is lifted off the ground it will just spin....to get the other side to drive the vehicle you apply the steering brake to the spinning side. It sounds like a bad thing but really it is not...it just takes a little getting used to.

The new style Argo trans is a 3 differential type...it seems to be more user friendly, but no longer allows "skid steering" In HIGh gear: the inside tires turn at 1/3 the rate of the outside tires. In LOW gear the inside tires turn in reverse giving a much tighter turning circle....but still not sliding sideways. I think this design makes it easier for someone new to amphibs to jump in and drive off safely with no learning curve.

A t-20 will take a little getting used to also, but you will learn quickly and be impressed with what these machines will do.

I have a 1999 conquest so is that considered an old or new style Argo? is there anything I should know about the Argo I have?

It is the older, open-style, transmission if it's a 1999.
