Mark, thanks for the details re: registering your Max. I should be ready to battle the "Vampire" state in a few months when my max is back in one piece. "Breaking the trail" for others is appreciated.

Finally finished the MaxII restoration. After a few shake down trips around the property and down back, it was time to register it with our beloved state. My first trip to the DMV I was met with a dumbfounded look from the clerk. Seems the serial number (#6864) was too short for them to figure out what to do. "Must be some sort of Gator-like thing" she said. "Those can't be registered". Here we go.....

NY ALWAYS has to make things difficult. Then they'll take all your money after you find a way to get it registered.

I don't know why I live in this state except for the job, family, weather, people. If we could just do something about Albany. The DMV gave me a phone number for their "hotline". The actually knowledgeable guy said I could get a VIN number for it at a facility on Dingens St. (reference for WNY people). I'll pursue that if trips to a couple other DMV offices fail.
Mike d, I might try that extra digit(s) trick. NYS VIN numbers are what? 16,17 digits?...JP, As a lifelong resident of NY, I've accepted the fact and regularly ship a strong box of cash directly to the state. Why are you online at 2am.

I am also a resident in NYS I live about 30 mins east of syracuse and I'm still fiddling with my MAX but I have put it on the back burner b/c there really isn't anywhere to ride the thing. I have 40 acres of property and If I ever get mine complete i'm thinking about making some trails (they wont' be huge but it's swampy so it'll be fun). If it happens I'll be sending out invitations to come try it out. On another note I work for NYS so i am going to start talking to a friend of mine and see what he says about these AATV's see if we can get a registration form just for them so we don't have to jump through hoops like this.

I was just able to renew my snowmobile registration online. It gets so much easier after that first time.

I was finally able to stop by another DMV office. NYS 3, Dave Smith 0. My Max is still apparently not an ATV, but they say it is a boat.

Dave, it's hit or miss with the DMV......I'm not very fond of that place and I always do everything by the book and it's still a headache. It depends on the person that helps you. Some will make it happen for you, others won't.

Had some spare time today and went to another DMV. I took everything their website said was required to register an ATV. I was there for about 45 minutes. In that time only two other people came in to do business. I walked out with the Max registered in NYS. They accepted the 4 digit serial number as a VIN. The most important thing I took was an origional owners manual that listed the weight and width to prove that it met the NYS ATV criteria. I'd like to say that I was completely honest on all the forms.....but I won't. Next step, insurance.

Good work! If you can send me any info that will help me I will take it. The NYS DMV let me register my "boat" but would not acknowledge it as an ATV. Insurance was no problem, progressive was happy to do it. Nobody else wanted to insure it but they were ok without any issues.

Move to NC where the state and the people are not such an up tight pain in the ass. I was born and raised in NY and they can keep it! NC for me, where you can ride free!
6X6 toys...... now THAT is down right American!
