do yourself and your buddies a favor, pack a tool kit!! could save you a long walk through sometimes unwalkable terrain when riding alone!when riding with a friend could save you a lot of time riding home for tools.if your by yourself and have a cell phone it could save your buddy the hassle of coming to get you!!here's a pic of my tool kit, only weighs 6 pounds and can be secured anywhere to help balance aatv!good idea to carry a first aid kit as well!!! there are many different kinds of multi tools that save weight.these are my favorite ones.the 3 point vice grips are really good on stripped, rusty nuts.this antique combo is my favorite its a little heavy but can be used as a hammer, mini vice or adjustable wrench!sometimes multi tool don't work well so specific allen wrenches your aatv needs and sometimes custom cut wrenches or one or two sockets are great also. a little fuel line, master links and add a links, extra spark plug, some wire and crimp connectors too. depending on how far and how hard you ride might be a good idea to carry an extra axle,if not you can swap a bent front for a center in about an hour or less, metal cutting saw blade for cutting bent section off so you can use the rest for center strokets! cell phone and water bottle are also good ideas. depending on what breaks...might be a good idea to hide a flask of jack somewhere TOOO...

Great post srg! I think your list of supplies covers just about anything that you could need in an emergency situation on on the trails. I have broke down on the trail before, but luckily it wasn't that far away where I couldn't get another one of my other 6 wheelers or tractors back to recover it. I've spent more time working on my machines to make them reliable than riding lately, but when I do take my rigs on a long ride you bettter believe that I will be loading up everything that you mentioned. Thanks for posting up this up, I'm sure it will save a lot of 6x6World members some trouble and frustration.

Good post SRG...we are on the same wavelength. I am putting mine together as well. I'm also going to add first aid kit (canine and human), MRE's and water filter. The Jack Daniels is an excellent addition. Also, I would recommend an extra belt, as I actually shredded one this year, and it was nice to have a spare.

EDIT: Add mosquito repellent and baby wipes to that list.

Not sure about your machines but mine have the sprocket tubes and axle hubes that are pinned or bolted on, spare bolts are a good thing for me.

Great idea, srg, but I've got to draw the line at the monkey wrench.

I'd throw in a couple plugs and plug socket too, especially if it's a two-stroke... and a couple hose clamps, a chunk of fuel line. The tape and nylon ties can save a long walk back, too- multiple uses and light weight.

I have a milk crate in the back of the response w/ water, air pump, extra cable, fire extinguisher. Then a small cheap toolset, and a runamuk spare. That's what 8x8's are for, hauling stuff around. Until recently it was mostly used for other's needs. Everything has been used that I carry. The spare and FIRE EXTINGUISHER included. You'll have to ask Matt about the deployment of the fire extinguisher

                Frontier Owners...

It'd be a good idea to have a 9/16" or 14mm open end wrench for the main drive chain tensioner (that connects to the trans). I had this go completely slacked on me this weekend.

On my Avenger, I have to loosen two big nuts with a 15/16" socket before I can adjust the main chains from the tranny to the jackshaft. After adjusting the 9/16" head bolts I have to tighten the big nuts again to 130 foot pounds! I could not beleive that they wanted a nut torqued that tight. Is the system the same on the Frontier?

                    First aid kit

Make sure your first aid kit is water tight, I had one on my Grizzly and fell off in a big mud hole. Muddy band aids don't work to good. So I got me a old army ammo box , and put a new kit in it. It would be great for a water tight tool kit too. Cougar

Bring a cell phone or a long range walky

Bring a cell phone or a long range portable, two-way radio transceiver.

I do not care how much stuff you bring you still may need to get a hold of some one if you get in a big enough jam

GPS is good to you can you coordinates

Even then you got to think if I needed help how are they going to get to me ?unless they have an AATV a Helicopters may not be able to get threw high trees or find a clearing and ATV doesn’t walk on water like we do you could get your self in a place were no one can get to you in a hurry.
Why do we waste tax money on bridges and roads when we can all just drive AATVs

Yes, this is correct for the Frontier too...
Now, I too was very..uh.. worried about the 130 ft lbs. Which is probably why mine came loose and I could re-tighten the 9/16" bolts with a wrench.
Ok, ok... I'll push it to 130lbs... crap.

                          Tools

I always utilize the tool kit that I put together for the Max IV when I do any maintenance. This allows me to realize what I might be missing in the kit. Obiviously I choose to leave some stuff out and go to the shop to retreive the big stuff. In the end, I know exactly what my tool bag will do. I am suprised at how few tools are actually needed.

I do the same thing with my Harley RoadKing.

The downside is that I end up working on everyone elses machines, but I guess I really do enjoy that too.

Seems like the most prepared have fewer breakdowns.

                            Emergency Supplies/tools

Didn't mean to revive this old thread but it sure has some useful info in it. Thanks for posting it SRG121. I like your suggestions and for a newbie like me, it really helps. The fuel line, wire connectors and small items were a great help that I don't have in my emergency kit. I can't help but add maybe a small roll of duct tape and/or electrical tape and maybe some fuses that work for your Argo or Max. I ran into a guy on a caribou hunt that had a fuse blow on his ATV 25 miles from his truck. Luckily my buddy had a fuse to give to him so he could start his engine and drive out.

Silverbullet and Philip, I could have sworn I looked the torque ft lbs for that 15/16" bolt and it said 80 ft lbs. Also, I'm pretty sure my buddy's Avenger manual said the same thing. And I talked to the service guy at our Argo shop and he said 80 ft lbs also. Does your manual's say 130 ft lbs?? 80 ft lbs is a lot of torque but 130 sounds like an awful lot of torque to me. Let me know on that for I've been using 80 and it works but after every outing, the right idler chain (think that's what it is), the one where you adjust with the 9/16" wrench is just a wee bit loose.

                            Thanks

My two cents on the emergency kit...

Bring Red Flare, like the police use on the highways when there is an accident, at night they could be usefull tho be seen from the air. The other thing is a lighter, i don't smoke so i always carry one in case we need to make a fire to get warm. The rest of the list is really complete. The only last thing that RI and Argo could put on their machine is a bigger compartment for tools!!!!!
