What about adding a zinc anode?

I noticed that I do not see a zinc anode tab any were on my vehicles. Should there be one? If there isn’t one stock I was thinking of adding to prevent any further corrosion.
The marine industry has been using this for years and I noticed how well they work when I bought a used outboard that had its Anode painted over even the non ferrous metals were being attacked until I removed the paint.

Do you have two different metals on your machine that are going to be submerged underwater for an extensive period of time? I guess if you have an argo with bearing extensions and leave it in saltwater all the time then the aluminum would start to dissolve due to galvanic corrosion. Of course the steel parts will corrode too.

I don't know of anyone ever having their aatv in the saltwater that much.

These are used in fresh water boats aswell

My boats only see fresh water and the anode still helps allot.
It may not decompose as fast as salt water but some lakes have an acidic PH balance that will corrode metals and aluminums. It would need to be a very sterile body of water not to cause any type of corrosion. Also water gets in the boat no matter what you do to prevent it; this is why they just put bulge pumps in because there is no use in fighting it.

Then stick some zinc anodes on if it makes you feel better.

Unless you moor your AATV in the water 24 hours a day for months at a time the anodes are unnecessary and probably useless. Galvanic corrosion is different than rust.

Ok let’s change the tread to preventing rust & corrosion

It looks like an Argo I just picked up spent allot of time in the water and they guy did not use the proper lubrication or any lubrication on the chains. Now I am lucky this did not have too many hours on it and the rust is surface rust but a few more months and it would have been beyond surface rust. The frame is still solid accept for the trailer hitch area which I will fix. Axle flanges are a bit pitted. Tips on preventing this from happening I am sure would befit other AATV owners .


You guys may laugh at the anode idea but I have discovered how well it works even on ferrous metals in an engine well area of a boat I have were water seldom gets too. I will take pictures of it when I get my boat out. I discovered how well it worked by accident when I left an anode there by chance. This is not on the out side but on the inside of the vessel.

There is a corrosion prevention box that goes on cars. You can also coat the frame with rust bullet. When I do a complete tear down I blast the frame then paint it with rust bullet. The corrosion problem is gone forever unless a person grinds or drill into the metal.

You Argo rust is not uncommon. I run across them all the time like that. It is not from being used in the water or even docked. it is from people leaving them sitting outside in the weather and leaving the plugs in or using it in the water and not draining it out and cleaning it afterwards. It is from poor owner operator maintenance.

This is just one of the many things to look for when buying a used AATV. A 2007 could be a total piece of junk if it has been neglected. And a Machine from the early 90's could be a gem if it was taken care of properly. This is an issue when people shop for deals and don't know what they are getting.
