  • cleaning your chains

A few guys like heard how I clean the chains up on my Argo and thought it was a neat idea so I thought I would share it. To me it is nothing special but just the same here it is.

I drive the argo a little bit to warm everything up and then I pull the floor pans and raise the argo with floor jacks. Once it is in the air and out of gear I spray the chains with Ez-Off oven cleaner and rotate the tires to make sure I get everything covered. After it soaks a little while I lower the rear floor jack and rinse everything with a hose. This is followed up with blowing the inside of the Argo out with a leaf blower to dry everything off. I then spray the chains down with new chain lube and the adjusters get a few shots of white grease.

So, I am a little curious about the active ingredient in EZ-Off. If I am not mistaken it is sodium hydroxide, which can burn the skin and can react to aluminum. The propelant is butane I think, so no smoking. You might want to check the MSDS sheet and try the auto parts store for a more user friendly alternative. Not trying to lay down a buzz kill here, but I used oven cleaner once to degrease my engine compartment in my auto and it turned all the exposed electrical connections a fuzzy green color. Just sayin... RR

I am only using it on the chains not the engine.

i have used diesel before, not on 6x6 but other open chain systems, anything that is not a degreaser will work fine(and wont harm other things)
