  • Hustler 900 questions

Hi guys I'm new on here and just bought a hustler. It runs but the clutch needs work and the exhaust on it is a thrush muffler .What exhaust should i have and what spring works in the clutch . Oh it has a k440 2 AX engine in it. Also i ca n not find a parts break down of the hustler itself just to see how many origanl parts are on it or whats been changed. Any information would be great. I live in Nova Scotia Canada and no one really knows anything about these. Thanks Brian.

Brian, your engine is a 440cc Kohler. It makes the Hustler a very quick machine. You will need a 2 stroke driven clutch spring for the clutch on the T-20 transmission. I believe it is a yellow spring......you might want to call Recreatives and tell them you need a 2 stroke driven clutch spring, I think they have some ones sitting upstairs in their factory. Also, you might need a new belt, since a worn belt can often be confused for a clutch problem. You can use an older snowmobile pipe for the exhaust on the Hustler.

Here's a Hustler manual that might help you out:

And here's a Kohler engine manual:

Thanks for all the info. I adjusted some linkages in the shifters as there was some play seems to be a little everywhere equaling a lot. After running it for about 10 minutes in the woods it stalls and is hard to start or I need to let it sit for awhile, would this be over heating ? Again thanks for the info I can tell this is going to be a learning curve but the help on here will easy that!

The Kohler 440 is a good engine if you want to go fast, but if you plan on doing more trail riding, I'd say, switch to a 4 stroke V twin Briggs Vanguard. You'll need to get a new drive clutch and change the spring in the driven clutch to a green 4 stroke spring from Recreatives, but this will swap will make your machine very reliable and it will last a very, very long time. The Hustlers are great machines and there are many members here that have updated theirs with a modern V-twin 4 stroke and they love it.

I thought that from the posts I've read I guess the next question is what horse power 23 or 25?

23 is plenty but I never had anyone complain that their engine made too much power so get what you feel comfortable paying for. A 16 would be ok, an 18 would be good enough, a 21 would move it pretty good, anything more could be considered very cool or excessive depending on who your talking too. And the guy that says it excessive is just jealous.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

I have the 440 twin in my hustler. The only problem I have had with it is the plastic piece in the pull start, complete junk Have replaced it twice already. If you have a starter on it make sure you dont fry it! I have been looking high and low for the parts to rebuild it with no luck, Richard Clark wants almost 400 bucks for it, Im sure JP told you to stay away from him, make sure you do he's crazy and youll go broke trying to fix the machine. I got a phone number if yo need parts for that 440 Pm ill send it to you if needed, if you decide to do the 4 stroke conversion I may be interested in your motor!

I'll keep you in mind not sure what motor would be worth. I do a lot of hunting and find it loads up with fuel when going through the woods. Still looking to find a Briggs at a good price.
