  • motor for my hustler? whats best?

exploring some options for an engine. I want to replace the rotax with a 4 stroke engine. being offered a robin industrial 10 hp images i will post later

10hp is a little small for the size machine. I have a 16hp in my max iv right now and intend on going much bigger. My 18hp Briggs in my attex is pretty sweet for the size machine. The geo metro 3cylinder could be the best bang for the buck though.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

lol on the geo metro engine. yeah after looking at the engine shaft on the 10 hp i decided to pass. tomorrow i'm off to purchase a yamaha 440 sled complete. hoping the engine will swap accross nicely if not for 50 bucks it's good tradeable material

find a 340 or 440 fan cooled snowmobile engine on ebay. You will have to fab and exhaust system and motor mounts. I have the original Kohler 440 twin on my hustler, and It goes pretty good. the nice thing is with the sled engine you can find parts any were and they have alsorts of power and speed!

is 4 stroke a bad idea? how hard are the original kohlers to get? i'm driving to cason city tomorrow to buy a 440 yamaha snowmobile but id prefer an electric start engine personally

4 strokes engines are a great idea. They use regular gas, 99% of them have electric starters, produces more torque, more reliable, better fuel consumption, etc,,,, 2-strokes are smaller and faster on the top end and rev quicker also. If you're trail riding, go with the 4 stroke, v-twin hopefully,,, if your racing get a 2-stroke, in my opinion only!

i turned down a 4 stroke today due to the shft being incorrect for my clutch plus i guess 10 hp was too small. what kind of shaft ends will the clutches mount to ok?

They need a straight, non tapered shaft with a keyway......usually the keyway is 1/4" I believe. The shaft diameter will be 1" or 1 1/8".

Cannot go wrong with a Briggs 18hp Vanguard V-twin. Small Engine Warehouse: 356447-3079 - Briggs or similar. You can find them from many different vendors.

I would say it depends on what you want. I'm sure a duromax ungovern would work fine. Especially if you're selling it. I would rather a larger 18hp Briggs or larger though.
But for the money its hard to beat duromax.

well i totally lucked out and bought a 1976 yamaha exciter 440 complete running sled. here is the dilemma. it runs too good and is in great shape. I paid 50 bucks for it and got it running tonight. other then modifying the exhaust to fit it looks like a good shoe in. I just hate tearing this sled up. so i'm going to attempt to trade the sled for a ready made motor hopefully something with electric start.[IMG]

selling snowmobile and opting for a rotax 340 electric start. looks like even the exhaust will work
